Reviews
"Frederick Barthelme is a master."-- The New York Times "Sublime. . . . Barthelme seems to argue, we might still find a separate peace from the terrors of the wider world."-- Esquire "Sophisticated, and wry. . . . A triumph of meaning-and writing. . . . A treasure of a book."- Buffalo News " Waveland is signature Barthelme."- Bookforum "It's impossible to conceive of any writer doing what he does any better than he does it."-Margaret Atwood, The New York Times Book Review "As clever and precise as a French farce; except that instead of doors opening sharply on one side and slamming shut on the other, these dangle indecisively ajar."- The Boston Globe "One of the most distinctive prose stylists since Hemingway." - Vogue "Barthelme's latest is about loss…but it is also a recognition that starting over, however involuntarily, forces people out of habit and into building something that might hold up better this time."--Maud Newton, NPR "Barthelme's eye and ear unerringly capture the moment he lives in."- The Los Angeles Times "Well-written and entertaining."- St. Louis Tribune "Illustrates the beauty that sympathetic, precise examination of people and places, stripped of any grandiosity or overcomplication, can convey."- Philadelphia City Paper, Praise for Frederick Barthelme "For an alleged minimalist, Frederick Barthelme has always displayed a hearty appetite for the luminous and the extravagant, a faith in the power of serendipity to transform the anesthetized life. His disaffected characters drift through their New South condo complexes . . . their responses so disconnected and elliptical that astonishment has ample room to sneak into the spaces between." -Francine Prose (OnTwo Against One) "It's impossible to conceive of any writer doing what he does any better than he does it. . . . His textures are impeccable: Rich, brightly colored, they seem to float on an underlying vacancy like mirages, leaving the reader dizzy and a little sunstruck. He has a hard, shiny, many-faceted insect's eye for the surfaces of things . . . second only to Raymond Chandler's." -Margaret Atwood (OnMoon Deluxe) "I admire Frederick Barthelme's peculiar grasp of the slant side of human relationships . . . superbly written and very funny." -Raymond Carver (OnMoon Deluxe) "In the more full-bodied stories inChroma. . . Mr. Barthelme really demonstrates his gifts as a writer-his ability to move us while also making us laugh and see. On the surface, nothing terribly significant appears to happen . . . and yet, in the course of such stories we are allowed to witness tiny, hidden moments of vulnerability, intimacy, and even beauty." -Michiko Kakutani (onChroma) "Frederick Barthelme is doing for the '80s what Raymond Chandler did for the '30s. He does for the 7-Eleven what Edward Hopper did for the all-night diner." -Baltimore Sun(OnTracer) "One of the constants in his highly praised fiction has been his dead-on presentation of suburban life, of an apartment-complex and mall culture where, as the Holiday Inn slogan puts it, 'the best surprise is no surprise.' Another constant has been a quality of fast, fresh exchange that makes the dialogue in so many other novels and stories sound like-dialogue." -Amy Hempel (OnNatural Selection) "[Barthelme] is one of the most distinctive prose stylists since Hemingway, capable of writing sentences so sharp and crisp and suggestive they have a palpable glow." -Bret Easton Ellis (OnPainted Desert), "Frederick Barthelme is a master."--The New York Times "Sublime. . . . Barthelme seems to argue, we might still find a separate peace from the terrors of the wider world."--Esquire "Sophisticated, and wry. . . . A triumph of meaning-and writing. . . . Synopsis
Set amidst the tatters of post-Katrina Gulf Coast Mississippi, Waveland is a brilliantly observed portrait of our times from one of the most incisive novelists at work today. Partially retired architect Vaughn Williams does what he can to remain "viable." Battling the doldrums of midlife, he teaches an occasional class, reads the newspapers, scours the Internet, and thinks obsessively about his late father. When his ex-wife seeks refuge from her hotheaded boyfriend, Vaughn and his girlfriend, Greta, agree to let her move in, perhaps a little too cavalierly. Add in Vaughan's annoyingly successful younger brother, who carries a torch for Vaughn's ex-wife, and lingering suspicions about Greta's involvement in her husband's murder and the result is an emotionally resonant tale of mortality, love, regret, and redemption that only Barthelme could unwind., Set amidst the tatters of post-Katrina Gulf Coast Mississippi, Waveland is a brilliantly observed portrait of our times from one of the most incisive novelists at work today.
