Synopsis
From the dream-like soundscapes of Popol Vuh, to the motorik beat of Kraftwerk and Neu! And the cosmic sound of Die Kosmiche Kurriere, Krautrock: Cosmic Sound From the Underground delves into the many different strands of 1970s German music. "Krautrock", a term first used by the British music press, was never a coherent movement, rather a loose definition to describe the music coming out of West Germany in the late 1960s and 70s. The book charts Krautrock's genesis in the music of the hugely influential Karlheinz Stockhausen, communal living, German politics, the student protest movement, psychedelic rock, free jazz, and The Velvet Undereground. Through essays by musicians who were influenced by Krautrock, profiles of the key record labels, discographies, insightful testimonials, and an extended timeline locating the music in the cultural climate of the era, both in Germany and abroad, Krautrock provides a thorough and engaging read. An essentially Teutonic phenomenon, Krautrock's impact spread all over the world, and influenced generations of musicians, in Britain, Japan and America. David Bowie, impressed by the music, moved to Germany and produced his infamous Berlin trilogy in the late 1970s. Brian Eno extensively collaborated with Cluster and Harmonia, while infamous radio presenter and music journalist John Peel enthusiastically received these sounds, spreading them in the English-speaking world. Krautrock's impact continues through to contemporary music today. It has been credited with being a huge influence on a diverse range of atists from Radiohead, Mark E. Smith (The Fall) and John Lydon (Sex Pistols) to Sonic Youth, Stereolab and James Murphy (LCD Soundsystem). Lavishly illustrated with previously unpublished photos, posters and other memorabilia, Krautrock: Cosmic Sound From the Underground is the essential compendium to one of the most enduring and influential music of the last decade. ILLUSTRATIONS 220 colour b/w illustrations, Emerging from the creatively experimental underground of late '60s Berlin, krautrock was given its name by the press who were keen to put a label to this spearheading avant-garde movement.Krautrocktells the story of this hugely influential sound that installed its sense of freedom and expression in a host of contemporary styles still heard today. Krautrocktraces the history of this genre, both artistically and politically, profiling key figures and bands such as Can, Kraftwerk, Tangerine Dream, Ash Ra Tempel, Popol Vuh and Neu!. The influence of these pioneering artists is further demonstrated with testimonies from contemporary artists including James Murphy (DFA/LCD Soundsystem), Richard Fearless (Death in Vegas/Black Acid), Mike Simonetti (Italians Do It Better), Steve Stapleton (Nurse With Wound) and Gavin Russom (DFA/Black Meteoric Star). Illustrated with vibrantly unique artwork from album covers, gig posters and other memorabilia,Krautrockfeatures unseen photos and visual documentation of this wonderfully creative period in German music, making this an indispensable guide to the movement., Krautrock: Cosmic Rock and its Legacy charts the history of this influential music genre, from its roots in free jazz, psychedelia and the music of Karlheinz Stockhausen, to the groundbreaking experiments of Faust, Kraftwerk and Can. The late 1960s in West Germany was a period of profound breakthroughs, upheavals and reversals. Communes were spreading, protests organised throughout the entire country, the desire to begin everything anew permeating the young. Out of this climate, a music scene exploded that would forever change the face of western rock; at times anarchic, at others mystical, magickal, or utopian, it pushed rock beyond any known limits. Never a genre or a movement per se, Krautrock encompassed a very wild and diverse range of sounds, attitudes, and past musics, from free jazz to Karlheinz Stockhausen, from dada to Fluxus, from German Romanticism to the Mothers of Invention. The musicians operated outside any known categories, breaking new ground and turning their backs to both their country's past and the conventions of Anglo-American rock.
