Though when attractive jewel thief, the 'Ice Maiden', Philippa Vale, turns up seeding Jim's help again, Susan finds she has a rival who would be very happy to take the detective off her hands. Combining action with atmosphere, and spectacle with suspense, BERGERAC launched John Nettles to international stardom for 9 series, leading him to another long-running role as D.C.I. Barnaby in Midsomer Murders. For the first time, all 8 uncut episodes from the fifth series arrive on DVD, plus the 1987 feature-length Christmas Special and an exclusive Audio Commentary with series stars John Nettles and Louise Jameson. 1. THE MEMORY MAN The Jersey police pick up a man found wandering naked around the island.John Smythe has lost his memory as well as his clothes, and his only image of the past is a lurid nightmare in which he dreams of committing a terrible crime. Belle Young, Susans aunt, is approached by Martin Jebourg, a smooth-talking lawyer who makes her an offer on behalf of two upper-class thugs. She turns to her niece for help and provides Bergerac with a clue to catch up with the amnesiac, who seems to have vanished into thin air. Guest stars Judy Cornwell, Jeremy Clyde and Richard Morant. 2. WINNER TAKES ALL Jarvis McLeod built a empire from computers, before marrying his partners girlfriend, declaring bankruptcy and then retiring to Jersey with his personal fortune and his new wife, Monica. Now he is receiving threatening messages via his personal computer and suspects his former partner, John Logan. Bergerac thinks the whole thing is an elaborate hoax, until a murder changes everything and plunges him into a fiendishly complicated puzzle. Guest stars Michael Gambon and Connie Booth. 3. ROOT AND BRANCH Jims former wife Deborah suddenly starts to get the feeling she is being watched. Not only that, but she has also started to receive some ominous messages. Charlie Hungerford is concerned that this daughter may be on the verge of a nervous breakdown, and asks Bergerac to help her. But Bergerac soon discovers there is nothing imaginary about her fears he and his family are under threat from Sydney Sterrat, a man from his past who is seeking revenge. Guest stars Christopher Fairbank and Barbara Atkinson. 4. DESIRABLE LITTLE RESIDENCE Why are there so many potential buyers for a small, dilapidated bungalow? Susan Young, who is handling its sale, asks Bergerac to find out why there is so much interest. Is it that jewels have been hidden in the foundations? Is Susan right to suspect Nick McVie of nefarious motives for wanting the property? The answer to the riddle puts her in grave danger. Guest stars Liz Crowther, George Shane and Richard Graham. 5. THE DEADLY VIRUS Bergerac and Crozier learn that a group of animal rights activists have arrived on Jersey to carry out a protest raid. Professor Gaines, a brilliant scientist using monkeys for his investigation into water-borne parasites, is among those warned of potential trouble. When the activists raid his laboratory, a ghastly accident results in the Bureau des trangers having to take drastic measures to prevent a catastrophe. Guest stars David Swift, Daniel Hill, Peter Llewellyn Williams, Peter Baldwin, Jennie Goossens, Rosemary Martin and Ian Thompson. 6. S.P.A.R.T.A.
