This [is a] delightful book...It presents a concise and intelligent summary of the major aspects of volcanism in a highly attractive format. The reader is gently introduced to styles of effusive and explosive volcanism, climatic effects of eruptions, the varied effects of interaction with water, the hazards and uses of volcanoes and then eight brief case studies. The text is clear, well written...An excellent balance has been struck between keeping the text at an approachable level, and yet presenting up-to-date and factually correct science...I suspect that most people will buy this book not to read, but for its 96 superb photographs and additional illustrations, all of which are in color...This book deserves to brighten the shelves of anyone with even a passing interest in the natural history of igneous rocks.
