It describes everyday life for enterprising settlers who stayed in the Sierra mountain camps and villages when the boom was over -- despite a culture that was still male-dominated, violent, and prone to boorish behavior. A feast for readers who are intrigued by how little basic issues change from one century to the next. Deborah Whitney (1865-1951) was the offspring of an exuberant farmer- turned-lumberman from Illinois who joined the stampede to California in 1850, and a generous, gently-reared woman from New York State who agreed to an "arranged marriage" out West but never really adjusted to life on the rowdy frontier. The story is told from the point of view of their only child, an independent, ardent tomboy of fierce opinions about many things.Deborah's impulsiveness leads to danger, adventure, and significant learning for her and her long-suffering family. A book about endearing but flawed people and memorable historical events, it is also, willy-nilly, a guidebook to Sierra flora and fauna.
