Although a few specimens of this character have been known for more than forty years, it is thought that the widespread distribution of this peculiar type of artifact has not hitherto been brought to the attention of students. (see sketch map, fig. I.) Many of the twenty-four specimens here represented are illustrated for the first time. More than half of the monolithic axes which we have thus assembled are from the West Indies. Six are shown from the southern part of the United States, but there areoseveral of which we have not been able to obtain information respecting the exact localities whence they came. Two are from the northern shores of South America, and three are from the eastern coast of Central America.1 With a single exception, the axes are all of the massive polished type.
