    Synopsis
The Second World War Illustrated: The Final Year completes the author's six volume visual tour of the Second World War. Benefitting from his many years of working in military publishing, he has painstakingly researched and digitally restored pictures of the key battlefields and events of the period from September 1944 until the end of the war. A particular feature of the book - and the series - is the detailed commentary accompanying the illustrations, all supported by excellent maps. The war is covered by concentrating on key events in various theatres. Sixty pages are devoted to the heroic failure of Montgomery's Market-Garden operation, covering the planning, key individuals and the forces involved in the operation and its outcome on both sides. Attention then turns to the tragedy of the Warsaw Uprising, in which the. Polish Underground attempted to liberate Warsaw from German occupation at the cost of thousands of resistance and civilian casualties. We then explore an area that is not often well covered in popular war literature: the importance of the fighting in Walcheren and the taking of the crucial port of Antwerp, culminating in the Battle of the Scheldt. A chapter is devoted to the autumn attacks to breach Hitler's Westwall (the Siegfried Line to the Allies) with heavy fighting at Aachen, in the struggle for Hürtgen Forest and in the liberation of Alsace. The Battle of the Bulge, fought in the midst of the harsh December weather, was Hitler's final major offensive action of the war; there follows coverage of the crumbling of the Nazi war machine and the Allies' push to victory with Operation Varsity - the largest airborne operation in history, leading the way to the battles for Berlin. With the Russians in the suburbs of Berlin and faced with impending defeat, Hitler's suicide marks Germany's total defeat: the fate of the Nazis' party leaders is addressed. The war in the east in the last year was characterised by brutality, fanatical defenders and combat in terrible conditions. This is illustrated by chapters on the Burma Campaign, the recapture of the Philippines and the fiercely opposed landings on Iwo Jima and Okinawa. The terror and destruction that was the Second World War is dramatically symbolised by the dropping of the two atomic bombs that ended it. With some 900 original photographs, accompanied by copious maps and diagrams, this is a true labour of love and an ideal purchase for anyone interested in the history of the Second World War in an accessible form., With over 1,000 original photographs, this is a true labor of love and an ideal purchase for anyone interested in the history of the Second World War in a more accessible form.
