Reviews
"From the former Talking Heads frontman, a supremely intelligent, superbly written dissection of music as an art form and way of life...Byrne touches on all kinds of music from all ages and every part of the world... Highly recommended--anyone at all interested in music will learn a lot from this book." -- Kirkus (Starred Review) "In this fascinating meditation, Talking Heads frontman Byrne ( Bicycle Diaries ) explores how social and practical context, more than individual authorship, shaped music making in history and his own career... his chapters on Heads recording sessions are some of the most insightful accounts of musical creativity yet penned. The result is a surprising challenge to the romantic cliché of musical genius... Byrne's erudite and entertaining prose reveals him to be a true musical intellectual, with serious and revealing things to say about his art." -- Publishers Weekly (Starred Review)

Synopsis
"How Music Works" is David Byrne s remarkable and buoyant celebration of a subject he has spent a lifetime thinking about. In it he explores how profoundly music is shaped by its time and place, and he explains how the advent of recording technology in the twentieth century forever changed our relationship to playing, performing, and listening to music. Acting as historian and anthropologist, raconteur and social scientist, he searches for patternsand shows how those patterns have affected his own work over the years with Talking Heads and his many collaborators, from Brian Eno to Caetano Veloso. Byrne sees music as part of a larger, almost Darwinian pattern of adaptations and responses to its cultural and physical context. His range is panoptic, taking us from Wagnerian opera houses to African villages, from his earliest high school reel-to-reel recordings to his latest work in a home music studio (and all the big studios in between). Touching on the joy, the physics, and even the business of making music, "How Music Works" is a brainy, irresistible adventure and an impassioned argument about music s liberating, life-affirming power.", How Music Works is David Byrne's remarkable and buoyant celebration of a subject he has spent a lifetime thinking about. His range is panoptic, taking us from Wagnerian opera houses to African villages, from his earliest high schoolreel-to-reel recordings to his latest work in a home music studio (and all the big studios in between). Touching on the joy, the physics, and even the business of making music, How Music Works is a brainy, irresistible adventure and an impassioned argument about music's liberating, life-affirming power., In How Music Works , David Byrne—founder of the band Talking Heads, and one of the most original and prolific artists of our day—takes on the role of musical historian and anthropologist as he dissects how, exactly, music has been shaped through time and place. Ranging in scope from Wagnerian opera houses to African villages to birdsongs in San Francisco, this is a guided tour of the business, physics, and joys of music. The author searches for patterns in how music is created and experienced—and then asks himself if these patterns have affected his own work. In many cases, the answer is yes; Byrne's music is part of a larger, almost Darwinian pattern of adaptation that music takes to its surrounding cultural and physical environment. One of the most brilliant artists of our time, Byrne's writing, honed from a life of musical experience, will be remembered as one of the most enlightening books on the subject in a long, long time.

I am very happy with my purchase. The quality and condition of the vinyl is brand new and untouched just as described. Well worth what I paid and was honestly surprised for the price. The shipping was fast, smooth and easy. The seller packaged the item well. I look forward to possibly buying for this seller again in the future !

Clear pictures. Exactly what I wanted. Seller was very clear in communication. Shipping was reasonable product arrived safely would recommend. That’s the end of my review but they are asking me to leave more so I’m just saying things at this point, but I had a very good experience with the seller and I have no issues with them going forward.

Item received is as described, packaging was good, shipping (seller is not in control of shipping) was terrible, dates kept changing and for the distance, its just bad. Appearance of item is great. Would buy again from this seller.
