"Mike Vaccaro does not exaggerate when he says that "the World Series was really born in 1912&[He has] written a smart, lively account of the series that goes beyond the games themselves-though his accounts of all of them are vivid-to show how what happened during that series reflected what was happening in the nation." The Washingtom Post "Whether the 1912 World Series was the best of all time is debatable, though, as Vaccaro writes, a case can surely be made that it is. But its importance and excitement cannot be denied. The personalities and style of the game may have changed, but few events can rivet the sporting world like a back-and-forth World Series." The Boston Globe "The Series could have taken place last fall, so glorious and fallible were the players, so modern and transcendent the game." Mike Vaccaro is a notable exception and Emperors and Idiots is absolute proof and well worth your time and attention." -JOHN FEINSTEIN, author ofSeason on the Brink "In his engrossing account of America's fixation with sports on the eve of World War II, Vaccaro mixes great sportswriting with historical context to look at the need for heroes." -TheStar-Ledger "A compelling tale of American sports with World War II approaching." --Delaware News Journal "1941is a tremendous book." -Delaware Online "The book informs and entertains, and will probably make readers glad they're reading about 1941 instead of living through it." ---Fort Worth Star-Telegram "A compelling read." -TheMontreal Gazette "An outstanding new book…I loved [it]" -Detroit Free Press "Vaccaro makes us appreciate the extent to which sports can inspire an anxious nation." -TheWashington Post "Vaccaro provides lively accounts of the major events in the final 12 months before Pearl Harbor plunged the United States into World War II." -TheWashington Times "Mike Vaccaro begins his tale by wearing different hats. He chronicles the different way people treat him when he wears a Red Sox baseball cap as opposed to the way people treat him when he wears a Yankees cap. Having captured our attention, he puts on his thinking cap and explains in deft prose the reason for all that noise coming from the red state and the blue state of American sport. Terrific stuff." - LEIGH MONTVILLE,New York Timesbestselling author ofTed WilliamsandThe Big Bam, "Mike Vaccaro does not exaggerate when he says that "the World Series was really born in 1912…[He has] written a smart, lively account of the series that goes beyond the games themselves-though his accounts of all of them are vivid-to show how what happened during that series reflected what was happening in the nation." Synopsis
An acclaimed author presents a riveting, must-read account of what remains, nearly a century later, of the greatest World Series ever played--the 1912 pairing of the Boston Red Sox and the New York Giants., Acclaimed author Mike Vaccaro presents a riveting, must-read account of what remains, nearly a century later, the greatest World Series ever played. In October of 1912, seven years before gambling nearly destroyed the sport, the world of baseball got lucky. It would get two teams-the Boston Red Sox and the New York Giants, winners of a combined 208 games during the regular season-who may well have been the two finest ball clubs ever assembled to that point. Most importantly, during the course of eight games spanning nine days in that marvelous baseball autumn, they would elevate the World Series from a regional October novelty to a national obsession. The games would fight for space on the front pages of the nation's newspapers, battling both an assassin's bullet and the most sensational trial of the young century, with the Series often carrying the day and earning the "wood." In The First Fall Classic , veteran sports journalist and author Mike Vaccaro brings to life a bygone era in cinematic and intimate detail-and gives fans a wonderful page-turner that re-creates the magic and suspense of the world's first great series.

- e***- (122)- Bewertung vom Käufer.Letzter MonatBestätigter KaufUnfortunately I received a damaged book, the item and the package both were damaged and it was clearly evident its appearance that it happened during transit. The seller was very understanding and gave me a full refund for the damaged book, though it was no fault of their own. Other than the damage, the book was as described, the quality and condition aside from the damaged spot was like new. The cost of the book was reasonable. I would definitely purchase from the seller again.
- v***v (2101)- Bewertung vom Käufer.Letzte 6 MonateBestätigter KaufAlthough this book was not as described, with no picture of it in the listing, the seller communicated well and quickly gave me a full refund while letting me keep it. The minimal packaging left the book a bit vulnerable (typical for ThriftBooks), but it did arrive safely and timely. As usual, it’s hit or miss with this seller, but often times you can get great values, and their customer service is always very good. Many other sellers with millions of transactions don’t even communicate. How to chalk talk, by Harlan Tarbell (Nr. 197064259889)
