Notes
Juice aka MrFreez is simply continuing a family tradition of creating and performing great music. Back in Mobile, Alabama, where he was born and raised, his father, grandfather, and grandmother all played or sang in the church. He would go to his grandmother's church and be blown away by the feeling the music would give him inside. "Grandma sang, Dad played the guitar, and Grandpa pretty much did everything else..." When his father wasn't in church he was unknowingly introducing Juice to a world of music. "Dad listened to stuff like Rick James, Heatwave, John Klemmer, Weather Report...." At the same time that he was being introduced to all of these artists, the Hip Hop movement began to heavily sample these same artists. "I used to love reading the inside of an album to see who was sampled for a particular song. It would make me look up that artist as well as research the names of the studio musicians that were hired to perform on that record." In grade school, Juice had his first experience with music in the form of classical saxophone training. "I wanted to play saxophone just like my big brother did," says Juice. His brother was classically trained on the bass guitar, drums, saxophone, as well as some other instruments. During this period of time, he also began breakdancing. "My brother and I would go to the skating rink when they had hip hop night. The whole hood would be there in large numbers. It was crazy. I will never forget those times...:" During High School is when he began rapping at house parties and also making pause tape/loop beats. "This was when I started listening to cats like Lord Finesse, Gangstarr, Black Moon, A Tribe Called Quest, Diamond D, The Beatnuts, Pete Rock and C.L. Smooth. I gravitated towards a jazzier brand of Hip Hop. I respected the hardcore (NWA, Tupac, etc.), and the political (Public Enemy, KRS-One, etc.). But, my favorite style was the fusion of jazz, soul, deep, rumbling basslines, interesting chord progressions, and hardcore drums. This is reflected in my music..." Juice spent his first couple of college years in D.C. at Howard University. This is where he really began to see firsthand that Hip Hop culture was worldwide. Freestyling with classmates helped him to actually find his style and craft it. "D.C. is where I learned about blending and scratching and how D.J'ing and Producing sort of go hand in hand..." After his second year in D.C. at Howard University, his family moved from Alabama to South Carolina. He left D.C. and headed for S.C. He attended and finished at the University of South Carolina. In SC, Juice began to make a name for himself producing for several local artists as well as writing music. He even was a D.J. one summer for WUSC, a local college radio station. He won a tournament style beat battle as well. "I love South Carolina. I did a lot of things that I would have never thought possible while I was here. South Cak has been very good to me..." The album release is set for August 7th. Juice is already working on his next project, with a "whole new crop of guests and a lot of surprises..." Look for him to be featured on other artists' projects with contributions in the form of lyrics and production, as well as running his studio, The Iceberg.
