Ordered to the far end of a galaxy to rescue a star system from a rapidly approaching black hole, Captain Dylan Hunt and his crew become frozen in time for 300 years until a passing ship awakens them. To their dismay, they find that the near-utopian Commonwealth government that ruled during their time has fallen apart and the various member galaxies now exist in utter chaos under a militant organization known as the Nietzscheans. The series follows Hunt and the Andromeda crew as they cope with their new environment and attempt to restore order while fending off the hostile forces that wish to destroy them.
