Synopsis
In March of 1957, the University of South Dakota Coyote men's basketball team qualified for the NCAA College Division Elite 8 in Evansville, Indiana. The Coyotes did so by defeating their fierce arch rival-the South Dakota State Jackrabbits. One fan, who witnessed this game, years later described it as the greatest game he had ever seen. The Coyotes then traveled to Evansville and were defeated by Wheaton College in the first game of the tournament. Wheaton won the national championship that year-which was the first year of the newly formed NCAA College Division. This would not be the last time the University of South Dakota and Wheaton College would do battle on the hardwood in Evansville's new Municipal Stadium. The coach of the South Dakota Coyotes was Dwane "Cloddy" Clodfelter. From humble beginnings, Cloddy grew up in a small town in central South Dakota during the Great Depression. It was in the pheasant rich fields of his native state that he developed his love for hunting. After graduating from Woonsocket High School in 1936, he earned a two-year teaching degree at Southern Teachers College and then began a forty-five-year teaching and coaching career. Starting out in the smallest of schools, he coached at six different high schools in the first fourteen years of his career. Cloddy became the men's basketball coach at the University of South Dakota in 1954. At this time, college basketball was not fully integrated. Many of our nation's flagship universities did not recruit black athletes. This was especially true in the South. In Cloddy's first year as men's basketball coach, he recruited two black brothers from Brooklyn, New York. For the next thirteen years, he continued to recruit minority athletes and, along the way, met with stiff resistance. Cloddy did not set out to become a pioneer in the integration of college basketball, but he did not shy away from the task, either. Dwane Clodfelter has been aptly described as both a gentleman and a "true character." CLODDY, written by his son, Kim, is a testament to hard work, courage, and loyalty.
