    Synopsis
From the critically acclaimed authors of Red Sox Century and Yankees Century, the definitive narrative history of the Chicago Cubs They were America's most successful baseball club at the turn of the twentieth century, but at the turn of this century the Cubs have not won a World Series in nearly one hundred years. Yet, the Cubs have some of the most devoted fans in all of sport. Glenn Stout chronicles the long, rich, counterintuitive history of this team in all its depth, nuance, and color, including - A rare look at Chicago's early baseball history in the 1860s and 1870s - The magical 1906 season--116 wins, the most in MLB history - Ernie Banks's legendary career - 1969's heartbreaking loss to the Amazin' Mets - The tumultuous ownership reign of chewing-gum magnate Phillip Wrigley and his son William - Sammy Sosa's sixty-plus home runs--and later corked bat and steroids allegations - The true story behind the "Curse of the Billy Goat"--what has really "cursed" the Cubs Complementing the text are more than two hundred gorgeous black-and-white photographs as well as essays by noted Cubs chroniclers, including Scott Turow, William Nack, Rick Telander, Penny Marshall, Mike Royko, and more. A must-have for Cubs fans past and present, The Cubs tells the complete story in a single narrative for the first time since 1945., From the critically acclaimed author of Red Sox Century and Yankees Century comes the definitive narrative of the Chicago Cubs. Stout chronicles the long, rich, counterintuitive history of this team in all its depth, nuance, and color., The definitive narrative history of the Chicago Cubs The Chicago Cubs have won the hearts of generations of fans, even if they haven't always won those pivotal games. They were America's most successful baseball club at the turn of the twentieth century, but by the turn of the twenty-first, things had changed. The Cubs have not won a World Series since 1908, and the last time they clinched the National League Pennant was in 1945. Yet the Cubs have some of the most devoted fans in all of sport. As Glenn Stout writes in the introduction, "They are the game's last unsolved mystery, the final conundrum, a historical enigma, baseball's oldest story, with an ending that has yet to be written." The Cubs chronicles the long, rich, counterintuitive history of this team in all its depth, nuance, and color. We catch a rare glimpse of the early days of Chicago baseball in the 1860s and 1870s and witness the magical 1906 season, with its 116 wins, still the most in major league history. Ernie Banks's legendary career is covered in detail, as are decisive seasons, such as 1969's heartbreaking loss to the Amazin' Mets. Sammy Sosa's sixty-plus home runs are here too -- together with later allegations regarding corked bats and steroids. The authors cast an analytical eye on the tumultuous reign of chewing-gum magnate William Wrigley and his son Philip, as well as the Tribune Company's planned sale of the Cubs. And we hear the true story behind the "Curse of the Billy Goat" -- what has really "cursed" the Cubs all these years. A must-have for Cubs fans past and present, The Cubs tells the complete story in a single narrative for the first time since 1945.

Great price for this huge book. Shipping was delayed but not too unreasonable though the book could have been packed a bit better with some bubble wrap as it tore through the very thin mailer envelope. Would recommend seller to cushion heavy books better when using thin mailer envelopes to avoid the tearing and potentially loosing books. Book is as described! Satisfied with my purchase and would buy from again if packaging was more sturdy. Thank you :)

As described ,nice price, quickly shipped but not in a padded envelope, nor with a cardboard padding inside a regular envelope, so corners of book were free to be bumped in transit. They were not. The book looked good even with a tear at one corner of the envelope. Both the seller and the buyer were lucky.
