As World War I came to its often chaotic end, with the collapse of the Russian, German, Austro-Hungarian and Ottoman empires, several desperate wars for independence broke out among their formerly subject peoples. In northern Europe the birth-struggles of the previously Russian-ruled Baltic nations - Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania - were complicated by the continuing presence of German forces; by the simultaneous Russian Civil War that had broken out following the 1917 Bolshevik Revolution; and by neighbouring Poland's war of independence. For the first time in English, this book offers a concise account of the course of all these complex campaigns, and of the armies that fought either to further or to crush these struggles for national independence. It includes detailed orders of battle, and is illustrated with rare photographs of the uniforms worn; with tables of insignia; and with newly researched colour uniform plates of officers and men of no fewer than 13 distinct armies and contingents that took part.
