Synopsis
In this comprehensive volume, the editors have gathered together some of the most outstanding contributors in the field of pediatric medicine to examine the wide-ranging applications and promise of the use of hypnosis with children and adolescents., In this comprehensive volume, the editors have gathered together some of the fields most outstanding contributors to examine the wide-ranging applications and promise of the use of hypnosis with children. Part 1 presents the broad framework of hypnosis-the concepts, developmental considerations, approaches to induction, hypnotic ability, hypnosis with families and ethical considerations are thoroughly reviewed. Parts 2 and 3 focus on key psychological and medical applications of hypnosis. The medical section describes the integration of hypnosis from acute care settings to the operating room. Clinical vignettes help the reader understand the hypnotic encounter while supportive evidence, strategies and caveats provide insights. This volume will surely become one of the most invaluable sources of practical clinical knowledge that will enrich the repertoire of all child health care providers, and will be consulted again and again by readers who wish to bring hypnosis to their practice., In this comprehensive volume, the editors have gathered together some of the most outstanding contributors in the field of pediatric medicine to examine the wide-ranging applications and promise of the use of hypnosis with children and adolescents. In Part 1, the broad framework of hypnosis is presented. Some years ago I had a couple of sessions of hypnosis and this enabled me to give up a longstanding social smoking habit.During this session the therapist told me that he had treated many clinical psychologists in his time and he had asked them all the same question: Why don't you use your own therapeutic methods to help you overcome your smoking habit? He said the most frequent answer was 'That would take far too long'.Consequently, I was really looking forward to reading a book about how therapeutic hypnosis could be applied to my work. This big book is divided into three parts. The first part makes a good job of setting the context and detailing the 'what is?' and 'how to?' questions. It also approaches the questions of 'how does it differ with children?' very comprehensively, which I enjoyed. The authors believe that children are permanently in a 'trance of psychophysiological change' and do not require formal hypnotic inductions.. Their premise is that the therapist just needs to join in the flow of the trance' This part also explored carefully the developmental considerations that are so integral to working with this client group-The second part appears to explore every emotional difficulty one could think of from sexual assault trauma reactions to nail biting and is abound with many interesting clinical examples. This section does a great job of weaving hypnosis treatment with other models, such as learning models. Finally, there is a section dedicated to medical implications exploring topics such as acute care, chronic care and palliative care.In conclusion, there is something for everyone who works with children and young people in this book and it will be useful for those trained in hypnosis but also, like me, to those without such formal training.''- Marie Hanon, Clinical Psychology Magazine, August 2008
