While it follows most of the rules of conventional ice hockey, the NES version opens up the rink with only four skaters and a goalie on each team instead of the usual five skaters. This also makes it run much faster on the NES console and gives you more space on the ice to make plays and score goals. It's especially fun if you happen to have someone to control a second team.Like the real sport, the teams switch ends after each period, and there is an option for a fourth period of sudden-death overtime followed by a shootout if necessary. You build your team from a mix of light, medium, and heavy skaters, and then play from a top-down view. Other features include real ice hockey calls like icing and power plays. Stage games against the computer or beat your friends in your own hockey league. You'll love organizing your own 8-bit Nintendo version of the NHL.Building on the 1981 Atari game, NES put more players on the ice than any other 8-bit title. The programmers added a ton of charm to the game, too. An animation of stadium personnel cleaning the surface plays whenever there's a break in the action in the middle of games. If a player fights with another player for the puck, then everyone else will join in. Just like in real life, if a stick infraction occurs, such as tripping or slashing, then a player is sent off to the penalty box. Having the ability to select different players adds a layer of strategy when starting new games and means no two games are ever the same.The first man who puts on blades is extremely fast and good at face-offs. He has a lower rating when it comes to defense. The second man to skate is more balanced, and the third is a heavyweight who is slow but can knock anyone else down. You'll have to decide which skaters to start in each round of hockey you play. The search for the perfect teammates to put the puck in the goal is a big part of the fun.There are a few interesting regional differences in the different versions of Nintendo Ice Hockey. The team roster lineups in all versions of the game feature the same players. They also both include the USA, Czechoslovakia, Canada, Poland, and the USSR as selectable countries to play as or against. However, the PAL and North American versions of the Ice Hockey game include Sweden as a sixth country. The original Japanese Famicom game included Japan. Just like in the real sport, this video game declares whoever has the highest score the winner.
