Despite being the most central piece of any computer, one of the most important and frequently overlooked computing components is the motherboard. If you are planning on building a PC, then you really need to start with a solid motherboard regardless of whether it will become a workstation or a gaming machine. The ASUS Sabertooth 990FX R2.0 is the third generation in a series of very effective motherboards. Built to be compatible with the AMD AM3+ CPU socket, it can handle all of the AMD processors. It delivers 140 watts to power any AM3+ CPU with support for up to eight cores. The great features don't just stop at the processor. It has four DIMM slots for up to 32GB of DDR3 RAM with dual channel support and speeds up to 1866 MHz. Thanks to their capable designers, ASUS knows that the heavy processing loads that games require can generate significant amounts of heat. This is why they have developed the proprietary TUF Cooling technology to increase heat dispersal across the board. This includes a 50% increase in heatsink surface area, real-time embedded temperature detection and response, and military spec hardware for durability. The result is a board smart enough to take care of itself and sturdy enough to handle anything you can throw at it. The expansion slots are also prepared for some serious heat. Sporting three PCI-E 3.0 slots, along with an additional PCI-E 2.0 (x16) and PCI slot, it can easily support up to a Quad-GPU SLI setup. It can also handle an AMD Quad-GPU setup with CrossFireX. In terms of memory, the Sabertooth 990FX chipset supports up to six SATA 3.0 connections at a blistering 6Gbps. It also contains two additional eSATA ports on the backplate to support external storage that can also connect at the full 6Gbps. With Raid 0, 1, 5, and 10 support, you can rest easy knowing your data is safe from drive failure.For a standard ATX form factor, there is an incredible amount of hardware crammed into this motherboard. Four USB 3.0 connections make an appearance along with eight backward compatible USB 1.1/2.0 connections. Audiophiles will also be pleased with the inclusion of full eight-channel onboard HD audio. This is enough to run headphones and a full 5.1 surround-sound system directly. For high-fidelity systems, there is an S/PDIF output to connect optical audio. For pushing sound to headphones or an entire home entertainment system, ASUS has managed to put together a system that can handle anything. The Sabertooth is an incredible piece of hardware for tech enthusiasts as well. Integrating the DIGI+ system developed by ASUS, they embedded multiple digital voltage controllers for ultra-precise modulation and tuning of CPU and DRAM voltage. In standard computers, this translates to exceptionally stable systems. For overclockers, this means you can get custom settings and clock speeds that are unattainable on other motherboards. The UEFI BIOS lends additional help. It offers a simple and intuitive overclocking interface as well as an Advanced Mode for experienced enthusiasts who require far more intricate hardware control.
