Reviews
Excellent research is offered in well-written and well-edited essays, which are also refreshingly succinct..The result is a collection which offers a crisp overview of a vibrant field of study. MARINER'S MIRROR The quality of the essays is consistently high....[It] is a fine volume and a fitting recognition of Professor Hattendorf's contributions to the field. INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF MARITIME HISTORY [A] fitting tribute to the dynamic professional life of John Hattendorf. This collection of papers will appeal to people interested in the connection between naval development and deployment, and the determination and playing out of grand strategy. THE NORTHERN MARINER It is fitting that the eighteen scholars participating in this festschrift are well-established in the field of naval history. They have drawn on their own studies to present topics from British, Danish, Dutch, French, German, Japanese, Spanish, Swedish, and United States naval history that complement Hattendorf's outstanding contributions to the history of maritime and naval strategy. Synopsis
This book presents a wide range of new research on many aspects of naval strategy in the early modern and modern periods. Among the themes covered are the problems of naval manpower, the nature of naval leadership and naval officers, intelligence, naval training and education, and strategic thinking and planning. The book is notable for giving extensive consideration to navies other than those of Britain, its empire and the United States. It explores a number of fascinating subjects including how financial difficulties frustrated the attempts by Louis XIV's ministers to build a strong navy; how the absence of centralised power in the Dutch Republic had important consequences for Dutch naval power; how Hitler's relationship with his admirals severely affected German naval strategy during the Second World War; and many more besides. The book is a Festschrift in honour of John B. Hattendorf, for more than thirty years Ernest J. King Professor of Maritime History at the US Naval War College and an influential figure in naval affairs worldwide. N.A.M. Rodger is Senior Research Fellow at All Souls College, Oxford. J. Ross Dancy is Assistant Professor of Military History at Sam Houston State University. Benjamin Darnell is a D.Phil. candidate at New College, Oxford. Evan Wilson is Caird Senior Research Fellow at the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich. Contributors: Tim Benbow, Peter John Brobst, Jaap R. Bruijn, Olivier Chaline, J. - g***a (146)- Bewertung vom Käufer.Letzte 6 MonateBestätigter KaufExcellent seller. Great communication. Thoughtfully packed and shipped. I ordered a number of books from this seller. They all came individually wrapped in paper and bubble wrap, then bubble wrapped again. They use colored tape so it has the appearance of ribbon tied around each book. All this showed how much they care about their products, their customers and their business. I gave them a want list of other subjects that interest me. Would definitely buy from them again!Antwort von furrowed_brow_books- Verkäufer furrowed_brow_books hat auf Bewertung reagiert.- Verkäufer furrowed_brow_books hat auf Bewertung reagiert. Thanks so much for your eye for detail and gracious and lavish praise!Art treasures of the Eastern Orthodox Church of Finland in the Kuopio Orthodox..
