The 1999 release of Jane's USAF combat simulator continues the company's dedication to titles centering on both air and naval combat. Players have four battle campaigns from which to choose that cover historical actions (Vietnam or Iraq), a futuristic "what if" action (Germany), and a fully developed strategic exercise in United States skies. <br><br>Working with the United States Air Force in designing the simulation, Jane's offers eight specific workhorses of the USAF fleet of combat aircraft. From the Vietnam war era, you can choose the F-105D Thunderchief fighter/bomber (a.k.a. "Thud") or the F-4E Phantom II, the most utilized air-to-air combat jet fighter in the world since the 1950s. Fly missions over Iraq and replicate the challenges of Operation Desert Storm in the powerful F-15C Eagle and its attack variant F-15E Eagle.<br><br>Train in the skies over the U. S.using the awesome power and maneuverability of the F-16C Falcon and the A-10A Thunderbolt II (Warthog) with its 30mm Avenger Cannon ready to take on all tanks and ground forces. Accept future-based missions in Europe specifically in the skies over Germany, in two stealth aircraft including the F-117A Nighthawk and the F-22A Raptor. <br><br>The game uses stereoscopic satellite data to render detailed terrain vistas and offers a vast array of in-flight assistance ranging from Head Up Displays to targeting aids. Jane's USAF is fully compatible with JanesCombat.Net, their proprietary multi-player Internet gaming site. Virtual fighter pilots seeking in-your-face human interaction can find the service (supports up to 16 players per game) at www.ea.com/cf_janes/jcn/.<br><br>Another of Jane's trademark comprehensive manuals ships with the game and covers in minute detail topics such as the game's interface, cockpit characteristics, flight and navigation, combat modes, multi-player setups and missions. Other sections give historical backgrounds, aircraft specifications (including the Mikoyan MiG-29 Fulcrum), and appendices dealing with acronyms, abbreviations, a full glossary, and preference windows.<br><br>For fans who like to design custom missions, Jane's USAF offers a Quick Mission Editor that allows for fast mission creation. Using the QME screen, you determine what goes into the mission and the computer takes over and places all objects automatically. <br><br>For the career minded pilot, the game tracks you every step of the way as you strive to earn promotions, win medals and become the top flyer in the USAF.
