Reviews
"Filled with urgency and intelligence, these essays are the material evidence of critical scholarship linked to social movements, within and across local spaces, fortified with social theory and rich evidence. While most days I find little reason for hope in the academy, these young scholars restore a critical sense of what is possible, what is necessary, and what is next." --from the epilogue by Michelle Fine, Distinguished Professor of Social/Personality Psychology, Urban Education, and Women's Studies, The Graduate Center of the City University of New York "Anyon and her colleagues explicitly and engagingly confront the separation between theorizing and data collection, demonstrating the strength of research tied to theory and the strength of theory that has empirical support. This instructive book shows that even though theoretical labor is challenging, it can also be exhilarating for the researcher, demanding personal creativity while building one's critical intellectual power. This is a terrific book for anyone interested in how social theories can be a guide to deeper understanding of educational processes." --David C. Berliner, Regents' Professor of Education, Mary Lou Fulton College of Education, Arizona State University, "This volume scrubs the mystique off social theories, making them accessible and even agreeable to a much wider audience, thus opening up immeasurable opportunities for future creative application. As instructor and students, we could not recommend this book more highly."--International Journal of Qualititative Studies in Education 2009 "This has been a valuable book for me, and I recommend it to anyone considering using social theory in their research, particularly doctoral students."--Joseph A. Synopsis
Throughout U.S. history, education policies, practices, and politics have been described and tested to yield empirical data, often with little attempt to place findings in a larger theoretical infrastructure that could provide them with increased explanatory, critical, or even liberatory power. This collection fills that void by taking the point of view that neither research nor theory alone is adequate to the task of social explanation. Instead, Jean Anyon and her collaborators argue that they imbricate and instantiate one another, forming and informing each other as the inquiry process unfolds., Most empirical researchers avoid the use of theory in their studies, providing data but little or no social explanation. Theoreticians, on the other hand, rarely test their ideas with empirical projects. As this groundbreaking volume makes clear, however, neither data nor theory alone is adequate to the task of social explanation-rather they form and inform each other as the inquiry process unfolds. Theory and Educational Research bridges the age-old theory/research divide by demonstrating how researchers can use critical social theory to determine appropriate empirical research strategies, and extend the analytical, critical - and sometimes emancipatory - power of data gathering and interpretation. Each chapter models a theoretically informed empiricism that places the data research yields in constant conversation with theoretical arsenals of powerful concepts. Personal reflections following each chapter chronicle the contributors' trajectories of struggle and triumph utilizing theory and its powers in research. In the end this rich collection teaches education scholars how to deliberately engage with critical social theory in research to produce work that is simultaneously theoretically inspired, politically engaged, and empirically evocative., Most empirical researchers avoid the use of theory in their studies, providing data but little or no social explanation.
