    Reviews
"For fans of "parkitecture" and armchair travel, this tome is a dream destination that features 10 bucolic National Park lodges from Arizona to California (and several states in between). Inside, the authors delve into why these structures were made, noteworthy architectural aspects, era-specific furnishings, people involved in the projects, and what was happening in society at the time of their construction. It's a fascinating look at their stories infused with hints of pop-culture history and a bit of wit throughout.", A witty, savvy, and welcoming national parts pictorial, Lodge spotlights the beautiful harmony between dwellings and natural wonders., What a lovely book! The beautiful pictures take the reader inside national parks! It was great to revisit some of the parks I have seen in person and see places I have yet to visit. My bucket list grew after reading Lodge . If you like architecture, the outdoors, and National Parks, you need this book!, If you love the idea of National Parks but don't love the reality of locking your deodorant in a metal box to avoid a nighttime bear-mauling, then you'll be delighted to learn that many of America's most spectacular outdoor wonders come affixed to some (arguably, equally wonderous) indoor accommodations. Forwarded by Ken Burns, his plaid fabric-bound edition takes you on a tour of the ten pinnacles of modern "parkitecture," from the seven-story exposed log atrium of the Old Faithful Inn to the view of Yosemite Falls from the leaded-glass, paneled windows of the Ahwahnee's Library Suite. Luxurious full-page photo spreads capture the lodgings in all their grandeur and all their obsessive detail, allowing readers to bask in the spaces as if they had their own room key. National Parks were designed for all, and that includes those who prefer to gaze out at the natural splendor from a polished wood balcony with a cocktail in hand., This is a truly exceptional book, lushly photographing 10 historic lodges across America. The feel of each lodge is beautifully presented in both photographs and captions -- it's like being able to visit the lodge in person and just walk around and enjoy the sights. This isn't really about the history of the buildings so much as a celebration of what you would find if you stayed there today. As a coffee table book, you can't get much better than this. In all, I lovingly made my way through this book and took my time just exploring and enjoying the images. The words never intruded and the one-page lodge introductions were casual, amusing, and inviting. If anything, I would have wished for 10 more lodges in the same book, it was that good. Well worth the read for a beautiful part of American history.

    Synopsis
Max Humphrey shines a light on 10 rustic National Park lodges in all their airy, timeworn splendor. No historic photos here; the images of the architecture and interiors are as they look today, highlighting these storied places in a fresh, alluring way. Sure, the lobbies are the main stage, but Humphrey touches on grand dining rooms, guest rooms, and rustic canteens alike. He writes about the buildings themselves in terms of the historical goings-on at the time, why they were built, and the players involved, highlighting notable architectural moments and period-specific furnishings. A smattering of pop culture history adds extra bursts of levity throughout., " LODGE is a beautiful reminder to go somewhere rustic with spotty wifi once in a while."--Barbara Corcoran, Shark on ABC's Shark Tank, Business Unusual Podcast Host, and Founder of The Corcoran Group 2024 Reading the West Awards, Longlist, Nonfiction (MPIBA) Striking photos and personal, experiential stories lure park rookies and obsessives alike to the rustic charm of America's National Park lodges.
