Based upon Solomon's Song of Songs, this tells the story of David's favorite son Solomon and his love, Shulamit, along with the semi-tragic misunderstandings and political machinations that kept them apart. That part's fictional - we don't know anything about her other than her name, family and where she came from - but there's plenty of historical detail as well as information from the Bible, from direct quotes from the Song to explanations of how the many names of God amplify our understanding and experience of Him, and some good wisdom imparted from Shulamit's mother, Ramat. Rated 4 out of 5 stars. Reviewed by Hilary Carter, Net Galley, November 4, 2013 Fifth book of the author's Old Testament Biblical series, this three hundred and two page historical fiction targets readers who love romance, the Songs of Solomon, and sibling rivalry. With the slang version of an illegitimate child used and stories of war, adultery, and immorality, it would best be read by mature adults. With Biblical scholars noting the Abishag of First Kings could be the lover mentioned in Songs of Solomon, Kerr writes a believable love story that comes to life between royalty and common folk. -Conny Crisalli, www.connywithay.wordpress.com, January 30, 2014, Based upon Solomon's Song of Songs, this tells the story of David's favorite son Solomon and his love, Shulamit, along with the semi-tragic misunderstandings and political machinations that kept them apart. Synopsis
Before Francine Rivers and Angela Elwell Hunt, there was Roberta Kells Dorr , author of Solomon's Song . With a degree in creative writing and a master's in religious education, Dorr is a gifted author of Christian fiction. -------------------------- "Love is revealed more in our sorrow than in our joy." -- Solomon, from Solomon's Song King Solomon, adored son of King David, was once simply one of David's sons with no assurance of ever becoming ruler. On the edge of adulthood, Solomon's heart is captured by a lowly shepherdess, a young maiden chosen to serve King David in his later years. Solomon longs to marry her, but his mother, Bathsheba, wants the throne for him--and nothing would stand in the way. Feel Solomon's battle against family expectations, his steadfast fight against heartbreak, and his longing of first love.
