The ability to control color mixing is not only important in your art, but it will also open your eyes to the delights of color in everything around you. It's the interplay between the hues that can transform your work from ordinary to extraordinary. Spontaneity is the essential factor when sketching. You may decide to use a dry medium, such as pencil; a wet medium, ink or felt tip pen, or the point of a knife, for layered wax and crayon work. As long as your approach is loose and relaxed, what you pick as the drawing tool is entirely up to you. By now you've worked with line enough to begin to understand what it has to offer. Moving a brush or pen at different speeds across the surface allows varying amounts of paint or ink to be applied. Along with speed goes pressure, as well as changes created by the tool itself, such as the type of point it has. What color is a line? When does a line become a stroke? Neither of these questions requires an answer. In fact, they suggest choices and possibilities. Once you are aware of the qualities of a range of media, linking them to a subject will come naturally. You'll be able to ask yourself, for example, would the soft fur of a rabbit be best rendered in pen and ink or charcoal?
