Product Information

Recently, polygamy has become a "primetime" phenomenon.Television shows like Big Love and Sister Wivesdemonstrate the "progressive" side of polygamy, whilehorror stories from victims of abusive marriages offer less upbeatexperiences among the adherents of the fundamentalist Church of JesusChrist of Latter Day Saints (FLDS Church). Bennion, herself a product of Mormon polygamy, seeks to dispel themyths and misinformation that surround this topic. This study, based onseventeen years of ethnographic research among the Allred Group(Apostolic United Brethren) and on an analysis of recent blog journalentries written by a range of polygamous women, examines the varietyand complexity of contemporary Mormon fundamentalist life in theIntermountain West. Although Bennion highlights problems associated with polygamy, including evidence that some forms are at high risk for father-childincest, she challenges the media-driven depiction of plural marriage asuniformly abusive and harmful to women. She shows how polygamistfamilies can provide both economic security and social sustenance forsome women, and how the authority of the husband can be undermined bythe stresses of providing for multiple wives and children. Going beyondthe media's obsession with the sexual aspects of polygamousmarriage, Bennion offers a rich description of familial, social, andlegal contexts. Throughout, she makes the case for legalizing polygamyin order to allow greater visibility and regulation of thepractice.

Hi eBay, not being able submit feedback with writing about it is the most annoying change you’ve made in recent memory.

The listing said the book might have highlighting or show some wear. It didn’t say some of the stickers had been used. I’m disappointed with purchase but am hesitant to leave negative feedback, as this company is usually pretty good. Will salvage what I can because I need it for a project I need to finish quickly.
