Notes
RUTH CARLIN, a singer-songwriter, was born in Brooklyn and has lived in and around New York City most of her life. Growing up, her parents loved theatre (her mother is an actress) and they made it a priority for her to experience a variety of theatrical productions. In her 20s, Ruth studied acting and singing while performing in children's theatre and Off-Broadway shows. After a few years, she fell in love and married. She left NYC, and devoted herself to being a full-time mother to two wonderful children, singing them to sleep each night. During that time, she wrote poetry and began writing songs, eventually participating in the BMI Musical Theatre Workshop as a lyricist. Ruth's passion to sing and communicate through song drew her back to cabaret performing. She began going to open mics, reconnected with musical director Paul Greenwood and resumed voice lessons with Marianne Challis. Her first solo show was in November of 2005 at Danny's Skylight Room, and a second show followed at The Laurie Beechman. Since then Ruth has performed regularly at The Duplex, beautifully directed by Scott Barnes. Ruth is at home singing folk, pop, musical theatre, standards and the songs of composers including Jacques Brel, James Taylor and Alec Wilder, as long as the song serves the purpose of communicating something true. She strives to get to the heart of a song, make it her own, and share it lovingly with her audience. Moon Song is Ruth's debut CD. In the Fall of 2012, Ruth will introduce Moon Song through a series of performances in NYC with musical director Paul Greenwood, and directed by Scott Barnes. RECENT REVIEWS 'Ruth Carlin showed herself to be a quirky, likable singer true to her art and her heart. With her unique, cinnamon-tinged, tremulous alto, Carlin conveyed both strength and vulnerability in a program that displayed intelligent song choices from an interesting variety of songwriters ranging from John Bucchino to Irving Berlin to David Friedman to Maltby and Shire. Individually, Carlin's song choices were rare and wonderful, showing off her good taste and smarts... She has a lot going for her: a sincerity that can't be manufactured, a clear commitment to her material, an ingratiating presence, intelligence, and a fascinating voice." '...the CD is a lovely, magical showcase for Ruth Carlin's talent.' Kevin Scott Hall, Bistro Awards.
