Set in rural Sardinia, the story follows the life of a woman named Maria Maddalena, who is known as ""the mother"" in her village. She is a strong and resilient figure, devoted to her family and her community, but also haunted by the ghosts of her past.As a young woman, Maria Maddalena was forced to marry a man she did not love, and her life was marked by tragedy and hardship. She lost several of her children to illness and poverty, and was forced to make difficult choices in order to survive.
