Reviews
"This book is a must-read for scholars and practitioners of airport urbanism. Investigating one of the world's top aviation hubs through the lens of urban design, Gasco pinpoints the key factors that drive successful airport-led development. These 'six principles' offer valuable insights for anyone involved in the planning and design of airports -- and the cities that they serve."- Max Hirsh, Managing Director, Airport City Academy "Drawing on data from many sources, including site visits and archival research, this book provides a comprehensive analysis of the urbanization processes associated with Singapore's Changi Airport. Its strength is its multi-scalar approach, which involves studying the airport and its grounds, the immediate surroundings, the national level, and then the interactions beyond Singapore's borders. This deep dive into the data, combined with a sophisticated 'layering' of its influences and interactions, makes for an exceptionally comprehensive and rich study of this key infrastructure." - Francis E. Hutchinson, Senior Fellow at the ISEAS-Yusof Ishak Institute and Co-Editor of The SIJORI Series "If you want to see, feel, and grasp the inner workings of our contemporary urban condition, you have to follow Anna in her vivid and brilliant investigation. Cleverly taking Singapore's Changi Airport as her vantage point, she leads us through the scales and spaces of modernity - runways, freeports, jungle flower farms, high-end electronic manufacturing, resorts - to forever change our understanding of what a city is." - Christian Salewski, architect and urban designer, Director of ETH Zurich Airports and Cities Research Platform, Anna Gasco's book is an illuminating read offering an in-depth, behind-the-scenes look at the spatial constitution of Singapore's Changi Airport. Motivated by urban planning perspectives and principles, the book skillfully leads readers through a multi-scalar exploration of the varied landscapes that characterize and splay out from the Southeast Asian air hub.... [Gasco reveals] how a flower nursery, an ornamental fish farm, electronics assemblies in Johor, and luxury beach resorts in Bintan implicitly tie Changi to Singapore's supposed hinterlands in Malaysia and Indonesia. These findings solidify the coordinative function the airport plays in connecting not just a city, but an entire urban region to the rest of the world, carrying time-sensitive goods and people to/from multiple jurisdictions., The Airport as Urban Territory: The Spatial Effects of Singapore's Changi Airport is a welcome contribution to the Singapore discourse. Its author, Anna Gasco, is an urbanist by trade at the Amsterdam Academy of Architecture, and the book has its origin in her Ph.D. thesis. By looking at Singapore's noted airport, a lot of useful information about the country can be discovered. Whilst the intended audience is probably those engaged in urbanism, one wishing to know more about the political economy of Singapore should find this an interesting read. The book is accessible to those without an in-depth knowledge of the location, with plenty of maps and images depicting the geography covered. I doubt that Gasco intended to contribute to the 'Singapore discourse' described above, but by describing an institution that is central to Singapore, its primary international airport, she reveals much. The apolitical and objective nature of the book is certainly to its benefit.

Synopsis
A new framework for understanding how airports interact with their surrounding region. Airports are major drivers of economic development. While firmly rooted in local landscapes, they serve as vital links to global networks. However, the massive infrastructures and externalities of airports--like noise and pollution--create tensions and present considerable challenges. What does this mean for spatial planning? What factors and stakeholders are involved? How can we better plan airports and design their relationships with urban development? Singapore's Changi Airport regularly scores among the world's best from travelers' perspectives--but what about the impact on its city and surrounding region? Drawing on a decade of research focused on Singapore and its cross-border region, this book offers an analysis of Changi Airport's spatial influence at different scales and on different kinds of spaces, including rural areas, industrial and leisure zones, and the hinterlands of Singapore's shiny metropolis. It uncovers the airport's many actors, the complex networks of terrestrial linkages and interactions centered around the global hub, and the governance frameworks used to manage it. The result is a new framework for thinking about how airports interact with their territories and an illuminating exploration of territorial dependencies and their effects on everyday spaces., A new framework for understanding how airports interact with their surrounding region. Brand new and sealed, high quality, great price below retail. Looks great. Packaged well, shipped soon and arrived quickly. Only issue was communications. For the first couple of days after shipping there was no tracking info. When I inquired about this I received what read like a computer generated response strangely asking me for info to identify the product, even though the message I sent was through eBay and for this product. But, then, tracking info appeared after a few days.

Perfect new book! Excellent packaging! Free shipping......though slow as molasses. This company utilizes shipping partners and apparently they have a lot of shipping partners and everyone of them had their hands on the package before it got into the hands of USPS who finally shipped the package. Good communication.
