Hawkins also takes care to develop her main character fully, allowing us to feel Izzie's struggle between her desire to just be a normal teen and her need to fulfill a destiny she has not chosen. The romantic tension between Izzie and Dex is nicely done, with a minimum of gooey purple prose.
