The Sony HVL-F42AM shoe mount flash is a digital camera photography flash designed to replace the Sony HVL-F36AM, and to provide additional lighting power beyond the camera’s built-in flash. The HVL-F42AM provides up to 30 feet of illumination so that it can be used for lighting a photo subject that is either near or far. The power generated by the flash is suitable for creating bounce lighting as well, so that photos can be captured with a shadow less, indirect flash source. Sony has created the flash with planned compatibility so the HVL-F42AM will work easily with Sony DSLR cameras, including digital SLR cameras on the Sony Alpha platform. The flash requires four AA batteries for power. It uses standard AA batteries allows for easy battery backups to be taken on location, and eliminates any downtime that could otherwise be spent recharging built-in flash batteries. The Sony HVL-F42AM shoe mount flash features both automatic and manual zoom, which increases the level of control while providing an easy-to-use automatic option as well. This flash also has high speed synchronization (HSS), which ensures that the flash illuminates the subject for the exact amount of time that the shutter is opened. High speed synchronization allows a photographer to use the flash when the shutter speed is set faster than the standard flash synchronization speed of the camera. Another feature included in this flash is wireless off-camera control. Wireless off-camera control allows the flash to be positioned away from the camera, but triggered by the camera when taking a photo. This feature can be used in a wide range of settings such as portraits or wedding shots that are designed to be illuminated from one side. In addition, the HVL-F42AM shoe mount flash has a retractable wide-angle panel, camera color temperature signals, and ADI metering ability. The flash face can be adjusted up to 90 degrees vertically and 180 degrees horizontally, so that various photography subjects can be addressed with the perfect amount of light. This accessory also employs automatic white balance technology to simplify the lighting process in various settings. The blend of automatic and manual features combine to make the Sony HVL-F42AM flash a powerful upgrade from the Sony DSLR camera’s built-in flash. The Sony HVL-F42AM shoe mount flash dimensions are 2.95 inches wide, 4.84 inches high, and 3.94 inches deep, and the flash weighs 11.99 ounces. While the size and weight of this device do add some bulk to a camera, it is on the small end of the shoe mount flash spectrum, and within its dimensions the HVL-F42AM houses a number of features that add flexible and powerful lighting to the options available to the digital SLR photographer. With this accessory, a standard Sony DSLR camera can be upgraded from a capable device to a professional tool suitable for weddings, portraits, special events, still-life photography, and other applications that require additional flash power and lighting control beyond that provided by a built-in camera flash. The HVL-F42AM shoe mount flash is made to be compatible with Sony DSLR cameras and is a rich lighting option in a manageable size.
