Product Information

Cipriano Algor, an elderly potter, lives with his daughter Marta and her husband Marcal in a small village on the outskirts of The Center, an imposing complex of shops, apartment blocks, offices, and sensation zones. Marcal works there as a security guard, and Cipriano drives him to work each day before delivering his own humble pots and jugs. On one such visit, he is told not to make any more deliveries until further notice. People prefer plastic, he is told; it lasts longer and doesn't break. Unwilling to give up his craft, Cipriano tries his hand at making ceramic dolls. Astonishingly, The Center places an order for hundreds of figurines, and Cipriano and Marta set to work. In the meantime, Cipriano meets a young widow at the graves of their recently departed spouses, and a hesitant romance begins. When Marta learns that she is pregnant and Marcal receives a promotion, they all move into an apartment in The Center. Soon they hear a mysterious sound of digging, and one night Marcal and Cipriano investigate. Horrified by the discovery, the family, which now includes the widow and a dog, sets off in a truck, heading for the great unknown. Suffused with the depth, humor, and above all the extraordinary sense of humanity that marks each of his novels, "The Cave" is sure to become an essential book of our time."

Reviews
Saramago's long fluid sentences, richly stocked with folk wisdom, lend his novels a rare quality of permanence., Another masterpiece from a remarkable writer who really may be, as many readers believe, the greatest living novelist., Loving collaboration that insists on the value of independence and a firm belief that art can''t be separated from life., What truly elevates-- is Saramago's style; this fantastically agile, irrepressibly funny, sympathetic, cerebral, and sometimes even corny voice.", EUROPEAN PRAISE FOR THE CAVE "A magnificent novel and an allegory of our times."-- Diário de Notícias (Portugal) "Another modest epic of anonymous heroes in extreme situations."-- El Periódico (Spain) PRAISE FOR ALL THE NAMES "A psychological, even metaphysical thriller that will keep you turning the pages in spite of yourself, and with growing alarm and alacrity."-- The Seattle Times "Reveals a master far from content to rest on his laurels."-- The Wall Street Journal PRAISE FOR BLINDNESS "This is an important book, one that is unafraid to face all of the horrors of the century."-- The New York Times "A shattering work by a literary master."-- The Boston Globe, A compassionate study of loyalty, love and the ways in which people face the forces trying to obliterate their spirit., Saramago''s long fluid sentences, richly stocked with folk wisdom, lend his novels a rare quality of permanence., EUROPEAN PRAISE FOR THE CAVE "A magnificent novel and an allegory of our times."-- Dirio de Notcias (Portugal) "Another modest epic of anonymous heroes in extreme situations."-- El Peridico (Spain) PRAISE FOR ALL THE NAMES "A psychological, even metaphysical thriller that will keep you turning the pages in spite of yourself, and with growing alarm and alacrity."-- The Seattle Times "Reveals a master far from content to rest on his laurels."-- The Wall Street Journal PRAISE FOR BLINDNESS "This is an important book, one that is unafraid to face all of the horrors of the century."-- The New York Times "A shattering work by a literary master."-- The Boston Globe, Loving collaboration that insists on the value of independence and a firm belief that art can't be separated from life., EUROPEAN PRAISE FOR THE CAVE "A magnificent novel and an allegory of our times."-- Di rio de Not cias (Portugal) "Another modest epic of anonymous heroes in extreme situations."-- El Peri dico (Spain) PRAISE FOR ALL THE NAMES "A psychological, even metaphysical thriller that will keep you turning the pages in spite of yourself, and with growing alarm and alacrity."-- The Seattle Times "Reveals a master far from content to rest on his laurels."-- The Wall Street Journal PRAISE FOR BLINDNESS "This is an important book, one that is unafraid to face all of the horrors of the century."-- The New York Times "A shattering work by a literary master."-- The Boston Globe, EUROPEAN PRAISE FORTHE CAVE "A magnificent novel and an allegory of our times."--DiÁrio de NotÍcias(Portugal) "Another modest epic of anonymous heroes in extreme situations."--El PeriÓdico(Spain) PRAISE FORALL THE NAMES "A psychological, even metaphysical thriller that will keep you turning the pages in spite of yourself, and with growing alarm and alacrity."--The Seattle Times "Reveals a master far from content to rest on his laurels."--The Wall Street Journal PRAISE FORBLINDNESS "This is an important book, one that is unafraid to face all of the horrors of the century."--The New York Times "A shattering work by a literary master."--The Boston Globe, PRAISE FOR THE CAVE "Nothing about The Cave feels like the work of either an old man of 80 or a world-famous author playing it safe. . . . It is yet another triumph . . . for Portugal's, or even the world's, greatest living novelist. Read it."--The Washington Post Book World "As with Proust, to be drawn into a Saramago sentence is to be drawn into a world that takes shape out of a maze. . . . His human voices wake us and we live."--The New York Times Book Review, What truly elevates-- is Saramago''s style; this fantastically agile, irrepressibly funny, sympathetic, cerebral, and sometimes even corny voice.", Saramago says he is really an essayist who took to writing novels. This is true. But the novels are masterly., A gripping, beautifully written, utterly enchanting, archaically romantic, and, at times, devastating take on ordinary people struggling to survive., Arguably the Greatest Writer of Our Time. He Throw[S] a Dazzling Flash of Lightning ON HIS Subjects.
