On a Gretsch Junior Jet II with a fairly compact bridge, the "yarn" wrap at the spool (ball) end of the E extended to the bridge saddle. I removed the E, slipped a few tiny washers over the stting to stand the spool away from the bridge plate and move the yarn off the saddle. Later I realized I could have snipped a brass spool loose from one of the replaced strings to do that.
