'The prints themselves are beautifully intricate portraits. Emerson said ''In every work of genius, we recognize our thoughts. They come back to us with a certain alienated majesty.'' Brandis has made the familiar flowers new, beautiful. They're rendered devoid of their usual color but with a greater richness and texture.', 'Wood engraver Gerard Brender s Brandis has long been an avid gardener and botanist; his encyclopaedic knowledge of the plant world animates the exquisite microcosm of this collection, intended both for the student of the complexities of nature's creations and the patron of the intricate art of wood engraving.', 'I have been flipping for the past month through the Wood Engraver's Alphabet by one of Canada's great engravers, G. Brender Brandis, and with each pass through find some nuance or detail that I had missed and am charmed all over again by this beautiful little collections of engravings published by the Porcupine's Quill.', 'I have been flipping for the past month through the Wood Engraver's Alphabet by one of Canada's great engravers, G. Coming to the Foxglove, I felt as if I had entered a clearing and there stood the flower, totemic in its beauty.', 'Wood engraver Gerard Brender ¡ Brandis has long been an avid gardener and botanist; his encyclopaedic knowledge of the plant world animates the exquisite microcosm of this collection, intended both for the student of the complexities of nature's creations and the patron of the intricate art of wood engraving.', ‘The engravings are so rich, so densely cut, that looking closely at the engravings one feels drawn into the pictures as if entering a forest, a forest of detail. His engraving is very much in the British tradition, with the feel of such engravers as Mackley, Robert Gibbings, Joan Hassall and Monica Poole.... In Gerard's case, being a book artist includes being able to do all aspects of the production himself. No other Canadian private press printer is able to combine typesetting and printing with wood engraving, papermaking, spinning, weaving and bookbinding. His lifestyle, which is spare and simple, imposes the onus of inventing and doing everything self sufficiently and provides the opportunity to explore his creativity as fully as possible.'

Synopsis
An elegant little alphabet book using wood engravings of flowers to represent each of our twenty-six letters. Gerard Brender a Brandis has long been an avid gardener and botanist and his knowledge of the plant world contributes to the exquisite nature of this work., Wood engraver Gerard Brender à Brandis has long been an avid gardener and botanist; his encyclopaedic knowledge of the plant world animates the exquisite microcosm of A Wood Engraver's Alphabet . This collection is intended both for the student of the complexities of nature's creations and the patron of the intricate art of wood engraving. The images are presented in the form of an alphabet book but the simple, and sometimes elementary, appreciation of the alphabet format will not suffice here. The abundance of the botanical world, and the multitude of choice available to represent each letter, allows the mind of artist and reader alike to roam free. A short introduction by the artist illuminates the choices he has made and includes historical tidbits about the lexicon of flowers., An elegant little alphabet book for adults using original wood engravings of flowers to represent each of the twenty-six letters. Uniform in format with the bestselling Wood, Ink & Paper (Porcupine's Quill, 1980).

Item received was not quite what was described by seller in listing. I contacted seller to request a 50% refund. Within hours, kind seller responded with a complete refund which did not entail my returning the item. Excellent customer service and the item was securely packaged and quickly sent. I would not hesitate to purchase from this seller in future.

Really lovely copy, exactly as described. I both read & collect hardbacks & this met all expectations. Seller responded really quickly with complete answers & additional supporting photos, going that extra mile. Ebay sadly has too many booksellers who have no regard for buyers, who lazily use 'stock' photos & disclaimers in their listings. This seller uses genuine photos of the actual item for sale & that is to their immense credit. I cannot recommend them highly enough. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Fast shipping and items exactly as described. I really want to point out the excellent PACKING, which was very secure and protected the CDs. Unwrapping it I felt like I was unwrapping a Hemingway First Edition, the care that was taken into packing. And a new box too, with plenty of extra room. Thank you!
