Title: Book chronicles memories of Lakewood Park Author: John E. Usalis Publisher: Standard Speaker Date: 10/20/09 In its heyday, Lakewood Park in Barnesville was a combination of Hollywood and Coney Island, where movie stars and coal miners, singers and seamstresses, big bands and grandparents and grandchildren gathered for all kinds of fun and recreation. The park has been closed since 1984, but its memory lives on for those who traveled to this coal region entertainment mecca to see Tommy Dorsey or Artie Shaw, celebrate their ethnic heritage or just have family picnics, enjoy some swimming, ride the carousel or just plain relax. Lakewood Park was the place to go, whether you could walk from home or had to traveled from out of state. Now all that remains are images captured on photographic paper, and thanks to members of the Guinan family, who owned and operated the park, many of those treasured photographs have been collected in a new book called, "Lakewood Park," which is part of the "Images of America" series by Arcadia Publishing. The book is co-authored by Peggy Guinan Grigalonis, Barnesville, and her cousins, Janet Guinan Cunningham, also of Barnesville, and Kathryn "Kathy" Guinan Connolly, West Chester. Grigalonis is the granddaughter of one of the two co-founders of the park, Richard Guinan Sr., and daughter of Daniel Guinan II, the son of the other co-founder, Daniel Guinan I. Cunningham is daughter of Frank Guinan, son of Richard Guinan Sr., and Connolly is daughter of Richard Guinan Jr., also a son of Richard Sr. Contributing stories to the book were Lawrence "Larry" Guinan, 90, uncle to the three co-authors and son of Richard Guinan Sr., and local scribe and historian, John "Puck" Sullivan. Grigalonis is also the co-author of another Images of America book, "Mahanoy Area," released in 2004. A member and past officer of the Mahanoy Area Historical Society, she is grant writer and vice president for the Mahanoy City Public Library. Not only will the book bring back plenty of memories with its historic photographs donated from the private collections of the Guinan family and other local residents, book sales will also benefit the library's reconstruction project, with all profits of books sold at the library going to the fund. The official launch of the book was held from 2 to 4 p.m. on Monday at the library. The second floor, now handicapped accessible because of the elevator, will have displays of memorabilia, original photographs, framed artwork, newspaper clippings and an original poster promoting an event at the park in 1916. The book launch will also promote the new Genealogical Center at the library. With a $25 library membership, "Lakewood Park" is free (a $22 value), along with one free search of the library's digital collection of their Record American newspapers from 1919 to 1929. Copies of the book are also available by mail, with shipping included in the price. Checks should be made payable to the library, with "Lakewood Park Book" in the memo line. For more information, call the library at 773-1610. The co-authors encourage purchasing the book through the library. "Janet, Kathy and I grew up within a couple of hundred yards of my grandmother's place, and in the summertime we lived in Lakewood," said Grigalonis. "We knew the stories and heard the music playing. I knew there were pictures around, but didn't know how many. When my mom died and I started going through her things, I found so many photos. Janet and Kathy knew stories, and my Uncle Larry was a great resource for stories." Grigalonis said there was one major reason she wanted to do the book. "There was no book on Lakewood, and I didn't want somebody from outside the family to write the history, because I wanted it done correctly and honestly, and
Synopsis
Situated in the coal regions of northeast Pennsylvania, Lakewood Park was established in 1916 by the Guinan family as a place to bathe, picnic, and camp. It became known as a nature retreat for the nearby miners and their families, and it developed into the destination for swimming, amusement rides, skating, big band dances, boxing matches, ethnic celebrations, summer stock plays, and political banquets. The park boasted a 150-yard cement pool, hand-carved Spillman carousel, and grand ballroom. It was the host of the longest-running ethnic festival in Pennsylvania, Lithuanian Day, from 1914 to 1984. Using vintage images, Lakewood Park recalls the various festivals and celebrations, amusements rides, and celebrity performers, such as Dick Clark and Doris Day, that made the park an entertainment mecca for 68 years.
