It records its history and examines its various, often conflicting, philosophies.' Edward Bond   'This is a short book that could easily be read at one longish sitting. It will primarily appeal to those involved in the field but can also act as a useful introduction to the subject for anybody with an interest.' - The British Theatre Guide   'For those of us interested in the knotty paradoxes that sit at the core of theatre's meta-theatrical truth-effects an ethics that is no longer ethics, a politics that is political for how it is yet to be imagined, an idea of the human that displaces itself the moment it is performed these pithy glimpses at the enigma of what theatre might be doing when it does itself well are timely engagements with some of the twenty-first century's most pressing philosophical preoccupations.' - Review of Theatre & series, Performance Paradigm, '[a] brilliant series...these mini paperbacks each give an insightful, focused overview of a key topic...start collecting now.' - Whatsonstage.com '...Palgrave Macmillan's excellent new outward-looking, eclectic Theatre& ... series. These short books, written by leading theatre academics, do much to reintroduce some of the brightest names in theatre academia to the general reader. While there are a number of remarkable insights in Nicholas Ridout's book, the most significant is simply to have brought together these two terms -- 'theatre' and 'ethics' -- in an approachable, compelling volume.' - D.J.Hopkins, Head of Theatre Studies, San Diego State University 'Nicholas Ridout...neatly organises his argument around the philosophy and practices of the ancient, modern and postmodern periods. Beginning with Sophocles' Philoctetes, he deftly analyses how the question 'how shall I act?' has been proposed and problematized in a range of theatrical encounters. For Ridout, the question provides a seductive starting point as it bridges both theatrical and ethical concerns.' - Theatre Research International 'For those of us interested in the knotty paradoxes that sit at the core of theatre's meta-theatrical truth-effects - an ethics that is no longer ethics, a politics that is political for how it is yet to be imagined, an idea of the human that displaces itself the moment it is performed - these pithy glimpses at the enigma of what theatre might be doing when it does itself well are timely engagements with some of the twenty-first century's most pressing philosophical preoccupations.' - Review of Theatre & series, Performance Paradigm, 'The accomplishment of Theatre & Ethics is to develop a theory of ethics in performance that can be applied to such a broad range of plays, performances, and cultures. Synopsis
One of the first titles in this vibrant and eye-catching new series of short, sharp, shots for theater students., What is ethics and what has it got to do with theatre? Drawing on both theoretical material and practical examples, Ridout makes a clear and compelling critical intervention, raising fundamental questions about what theatre is for and how audiences interact with it., What is ethics and what has it got to do with theatre? Theatre& Ethics is about how to act. It explores theatre as a practice through which we experiment with ethical action. Drawing on vivid examples from Sophocles through Shakespeare, to Brecht and the contemporary theatre of Goat Island and Socetas Raffaello Sanzio, the book highlights key moments in the history of theatre as an ethical practice and raises fundamental questions about what theatre is for and how audiences interact with it.

The book was exactly as described and arrived quickly. The only problem is a recurring one with this seller and other similar sellers - the book is poorly packaged in a plastic envelope and gets heavily bumped in shipping. I would like to see the books wrapped before shipment, but I understand this can't be done for cost reason. Luckily it isn't an expensive book, and I will continue to purchase basic books from this seller. A+++++

Positive experience but could be better. Item description was accurate but, it was shipped in a simple bag with no carton or any protection. The bag was broken in places and the USPS bent the book like it was a newspaper and ruined what was an excellent looking book. That was clearly the USPS fault but a "Do Not Bend" or carton would help next time. Otherwise accurate description, value, condition and Fast shipping. I'm a returning customer and will keep buying from World of Books
