Historical through contemporary figures of politics, science, art, culture, human rights, and medicine are highlighted in biographical passages and engaging photographs. The authors note that their book is simply a starting point to help introduce children to the heroes listed within, and they provide plenty of website and book recommendations to support further research. Since it is difficult to narrow the list of notable Americans down to sixty, they include additional figures of note in an Even More American Heroes section at the back of the book. But perhaps the best part about this lovely text is the collaborative approach the authors take in encouraging readers to consider their own heroes: family members, teachers, doctors, club leaders, and community helpers. Denenberg and Roscoe inspire children to take action in thanking the personal, perhaps unsung, heroes in their own lives. This book would be an awesome addition to a social studies classroom for upper elementary through junior high students, and it would be a great gift for anyone looking to provide children with inspiring stories of heroic Americans. The only problem is a recurring one with this seller and other similar sellers - the book is poorly packaged in a plastic envelope and gets heavily bumped in shipping. I would like to see the books wrapped before shipment, but I understand this can't be done for cost reason. Luckily it isn't an expensive book, and I will continue to purchase basic books from this seller. A+++++

Value priced and I'm glad I made the purchase as this is an excellent read. However, the book was mailed loose inside an over-sized plastic bag without any protection. Wrapped in a bubble wrap jacket would be a big help. A book can take a beating in USPS transit without some buffer. I can't tell if the bumps and dings were original or occurred in transit. I'd prefer to pay for shipping than have it sent with no protection.
