Product Information

The 1978 ten-cent piece is composed of 75 percent copper and 25 percent nickel. This combination of materials was put into effect in the 1960s, after the cost of silver became too expensive to use in the production of the US dime. President Franklin D. Roosevelt was chosen to represent this copper-nickel coin due to his work in founding the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis. This organization asked civilians to donate dimes to aid in the support of polio victims, their families, and research efforts for the disease. The foundation was later renamed the March of Dimes because of dime donations, and is why Roosevelt appears on the 1978 ten-cent piece. The US dime weighs 0.08 oz and measures 0.70 inches in diameter, with reeded edges surrounding the perimeter of the coin. Chief Engraver John R. Sinnock was chosen to design the copper-nickel coin because he had previously designed a Mint presidential metal for Roosevelt. The obverse side of the US dime features President Roosevelt's head, while the reverse side contains a torch, olive branch, and oak branch to symbolize freedom, peace, and victory.

General Note
The 1979-S and 1981-S Type II proofs have clearer mint marks than the Type I proofs of those years. On the 1982 no-mint-mark variety, the mint mark was inadvertently left off.
