Author Biography
Originally from New Zealand, Judy Ling has been based in Singapore and Malaysia for much of her adult life. She has been writing fiction, non-fiction, verse and textbooks for children for the past 15 years. After completing her BA at Auckland University, Judy went on to do a four-year Mandarin course at Singapore's Nanyang University. The later experience in Borneo of home-schooling her own children in English helped to confirm her life-long interest in education. Her daughter attended the local Chinese primary school, and this gave Judy an insight into the difficulties faced by children from non-English speaking backgrounds. Her knowledge of Mandarin and other local languages/dialects provided further insight. Judy's works have been published by many publishers in the Asia-Pacific region. In recent years, Judy has worked with her friend Anne Smith, to produce an English language package for schools which includes textbooks, workbooks, and supplementary materials. Anne Smith was born and educated in England. She holds a BA Honours Degree in Geography and a postgraduate Teaching Certificate from Bristol University. She is a successful primary teacher and has held posts of special responsibility for the teaching of reading and language and a Deputy Headship in West London. In 1986, Anne emigrated to New Zealand. She continued teaching and added a Diploma in Teaching of English as a Second Language to her qualifications. Whilst working with non-English speaking pupils within the mainstream, she wrote teaching materials that were published in New Zealand. In 1999 Anne began writing fulltime and, with a colleague, wrote a comprehensive course of readers, textbooks and workbooks for teaching English to primary level pupils. Her overriding teaching philosophy, evident throughout her written work, is to present learning as an enjoyable and rewarding challenge.
