Synopsis
In A Narrow Vision, Brian Titley chronicles the career of Confederation poets Duncan Campbell Scott in the Department of Indian Affairs between 1880 and 1932., During Duncan Campbell Scott's tenure as Deputy Superintendent General of Indian Affairs, his response to challenges such as the making of treaties in northern Ontario underscored his beliefs that the Indians did not have any legitimate grievances and that the Department knew best., A well-known member of the circle of Confederation poets, Duncan Campbell Scott is generally considered a kind-hearted and sympathetic portrayer of the nobility of the Canadian Indian. But his real belief about the conditions and future of Canada's Native people is revealed in his official writings during his long tenure as Deputy Superintendent General of Indian Affairs. In A Narrow Vision, Brian Titley chronicles Scott's career in the Department of Indian Affairs and evaluates developments in Native health, education, and welfare between 1880 and 1932. He shows how Scott's response to challenges such as the making of treaties in northern Ontario, land claims in British Columbia, and the status of the Six Nations caused persistent difficulties and made Scott's term of office a turbulent one. Scott could never accept that Natives had legitimate grievances and held adamantly to the view that his department knew best. Not designed as a biography of Scott, nor intended to cast a shadow on his motives, this book assesses Euro-Canadian thinking on aboriginal rights at the turn of the century. Because Scott was chief adviser to his changing political masters as well as framer of official government documents, he held a pre-eminent position as arbiter of Native needs and claims. The only study of Native policy in the early twentieth century and the only work to focus on D.C. Scott's career in government, this book makes an important contribution to our understanding of the development of Canadian Native policy in this century.

Contents written by seller on outside of package? Book shipped the first day of eBay ETA and arrived two postal days later with no communication, but it got here. Probs won't go to again, but this was a nice C+ transaction. The Katja Ser.: Katja from the Punk Band by Simon Logan (2010, Trade Paperback) (Nr. 386649529182)
- 0***a (4)- Bewertung vom Käufer.Letzte 6 MonateBestätigter KaufFast shipping, item arrived a week ahead of schedule and in excellent condition, just as described. Very good value for this hard-to-find book. Shipping cost was reasonable considering large size of this book and its weight. Packaging ensured item arrived in perfect condition. I received multiple email updates with helpful tracking info. Very professional overall. Would gladly buy again from this seller.
- r***9 (455)- Bewertung vom Käufer.Letzte 6 MonateBestätigter KaufArrived safely, luckily. Packaged ok but in used plastic bags in poor condition, and used card-board single sheet instead of a comic book mailer. I dont sell very often, so this might work for many sellers; however as a buyer just know that it is much easier to have comics damaged in the mail that way, so ask the seller about it if that matters to you. The seller gave me a slight discount for combined mailing, which is good for the costs involved. Overall still positive.
