"Although the idea of citizenship is almost universal, little is known about what it means for ordinary people in the contemporary world in both industrialised and developing countries. This book is therefore a timely contribution to filling this gap." -- Development Policy Review "How can human rights become part of the lived experience of those who continue to be denied those rights whether because of poverty, gender, ethnicity, caste or sexual orientation? This book develops a range of interesting cases documenting the promise and challenge of translating rights into reality. This is important, cutting edge work in the new discussions around rights, responsibilities, subjectivity and agency. Very highly recommended." -- Gita Sen, Sir Ratan Tata chair professor and chairperson, Centre for Public Policy, Indian Institute of Management "The case studies in Inclusive Citizenship are powerful, absorbing stories, told with force and passion that compel the reader to internalise them. ... What warms my heart is that the examples in this book poignantly capture how individuals, social groups, women, and indigenous communities across the globe have not kept silent, allowing globalisation to run its course." -- Krishnamurthy Pushpanath, campaign executive, Oxfam GB, UK "Naila Kabeer is to be congratulated for bringing together this collection of essays that give us a comparative perspective on citizenship in everyday life." -- Mahmood Mamdani, Herbert Lehmann professor at the Department of Anthropology, University of Columbia., 'How can human rights become part of the lived experience of those who continue to be denied those rights whether because of poverty, gender, ethnicity, caste or sexual orientation? Synopsis
People's understandings of what it means to be a citizen go to the heart of the various meanings of personal and national identity, political and electoral participation, and rights. The contributors to this book seek to explore the difficult questions inherent in the notion of citizenship from various angles. They look at citizenship and rights, citizenship and identity, citizenship and political struggle, and the policy implications of substantive notions of citizenship. They illustrate the various ways in which people are excluded from full citizenship; the identities that matter to people and their compatibility with dominant notions of citizenship; the tensions between individual and collective rights in definitions of citizenship; struggles to realize and expand citizens' rights; and the challenges these questions entail for development policy. This is the first volume in a new series: Claiming Citizenship: Rights, Participation and Accountability, People's understandings of what it means to be a citizen go to the heart of the various meanings of personal and national identity, political and electoral participation, and rights. The contributors to this book seek to explore the difficult questions inherent in the notion of citizenship from various angles. They look at citizenship and rights, citizenship and identity, citizenship and political struggle, and the policy implications of substantive notions of citizenship. This is the first volume in a new series: Claiming Citizenship: Rights, Participation and Accountability, The absence of gender awareness in policy and planning in the past has given rise to a variety of efficiency, welfare and equity costs. This book develops an analytical framework and a set of tools which can assist planners, as well as trainers, to ensure that gender is systematically integrated into different aspects of their work. It offers an inventory of the kinds of assumptions which lead to gender-blind policy, and assesses integrationist and transformatory strategies by feminist advocates to influence the mainstream policy agenda. An analytical framework for examining the gender inequalities generated by key institutions through which development takes place occupies a central place in the book. A selection of original case studies from the Indian context serves to illustrate different aspects of the framework and its application.

A smooth and professional transaction throughout. The item was exactly as described, clearly listed, and fairly priced. Communication from the seller was prompt, polite, and helpful, with dispatch confirmed quickly. The parcel was securely packaged and arrived in excellent condition, ahead of the expected delivery date. Care was taken at every stage of the process. I would be happy to buy from this seller again—many thanks for a reliable and well-handled sale.

Item was exactly as described and packaged to protect it. Seller’s pricing was spot on and when I received it, it was in good condition. Seller actually messaged me when they shipped it (I really appreciated that). Overall I’m happy doing business with them!

The Item itself I rate five stars. The seller, however, I stop at four stars. The seller met two out of three categories I look for when judging my purchasing experience: how well it was packaged, how quickly it was shipped, and how properly it was described; this seller provided prompt shipping and an accurate description, but failed when it came to packaging. The item arrived in a plastic bag without any reinforcement or protection whatsoever and suffered dinged corners on multiple fronts.
