Synopsis
A "delightful reader's companion" ( The New York Times ) to the great nineteenth-century British novels of Austen, Dickens, Trollope, the Brontës, and more, this lively guide clarifies the sometimes bizarre maze of rules and customs that governed life in Victorian England. For anyone who has ever wondered whether a duke outranked an earl, when to yell "Tally Ho!" at a fox hunt, or how one landed in "debtor's prison," this book serves as an indispensable historical and literary resource. Author Daniel Pool provides countless intriguing details (did you know that the "plums" in Christmas plum pudding were actually raisins?) on the Church of England, sex, Parliament, dinner parties, country house visiting, and a host of other aspects of nineteenth-century English life--both "upstairs" and "downstairs. An illuminating glossary gives at a glance the meaning and significance of terms ranging from "ague" to "wainscoting," the specifics of the currency system, and a lively host of other details and curiosities of the day., For every frustrated reader of the great nineteenth-century English novels of Austen, Trollope, Dickens, or the Brontës who has ever wondered whether a duke outranked an earl, when to yell "Tally Ho!" at a fox hunt, or how one landed in "debtor's prison," here is a "delightful reader's companion that lights up the literary dark"(The New York Times). This fascinating, lively guide clarifies the sometimes bizarre maze of rules, regulations, and customs that governed everyday life in Victorian England. - a***a (390)- Bewertung vom Käufer.Letzter MonatBestätigter KaufI order from this seller often. This seller is very reliable. There are other sellers that offer the same kind of discount deals as this one, but they are not as reliable. This seller always delivers without letting me down. The items (I order mostly DVDs) are always sent complete, as described, and securely packaged. My only gripe is, packages take on average 2 weeks to arrive. However, I'll accept that, over bad service any day. I recommend this seller.
- 2***4 (174)- Bewertung vom Käufer.Letzte 6 MonateBestätigter KaufSeller shipped out the DVD miniseries called THE KENNEDY'S to me very quickly and it arrived earlier than listed and well wrapped up for the journey. They have great buy two get one free sales and their prices are great. The dvd set was listed as good and it showed up looking as new. I keep coming back to them for their veritery, prices, shipping speed and communication. Don't know yet if it's a good miniseries, but it is a good seller to buy from. The Kennedys (Nr. 187493404678)
- m***8 (76)- Bewertung vom Käufer.Letzter MonatBestätigter KaufThe classic Curious George DVD I ordered arrived in great condition and as described in the description. The disc was dirty and appeared to be scratched but it played just fine. I received a good quality product at a great price. This seller, Dream Books Co., shipped quickly and took care in the packaging. I bought a lot of DVDs from this seller and they handled a large purchase very well; I'm not missing anything. I'm happy with my purchase so far. I will buy from Dream Books in the future.
