Since Yosemite Valley became a state park in 1864, the natural cathedral of granite, sun, and water has drawn an ever-increasing number of people to bask in its glory. The tally exceeded four million in 1996, dropped a bit after a 1997 flood, then returned to pre-flood levels by 2010. Through time, Yosemite's panoply of managersincluding a state-appointed commission, the United States Army, and the National Park Servicehave catered to the desires of tourists for camping, lodging, food, recreation, and a huge range of other goods and services, too often at the expense of nature and wildness. As a result, Yosemite Valley's finely-woven ecological fabricits very soulis unraveling. In The Soul of Yosemite, Barbara J. Moritsch provides a deeply personal account of coming-of-age with nature and Yosemite, and her experiences as a National Park Service employee in five parks in the western United States. Between 2002 and 2005, she served as a park biologist in Yosemite Valley. Her narrative describes how this lifelong dream-come-true turned into a nightmare when she found herself having to defend and protect the Valley from misguided management actions undertaken by the National Park Service. Ms. Moritsch provides a historical context to illuminate the roots of current problems with Yosemite's management, and addresses the degraded condition of natural resources in the Valley. And then she takes it one bold step farther as she clearly outlines a new vision for Yosemite Valley that fully acknowledges its incredible uniqueness and restores its wild nature. The Soul of Yosemite urges the National Park Service to break with past management practices and reduce the impact of humans on Yosemite Valley once and for all, to bring the focus of management back to the basics: natural beauty and wildness, and to recognize Yosemite's unique role in today's world as an emissary for wild places worldwidea much more important role than serving as a playground for the masses.
