Historical through contemporary figures of politics, science, art, culture, human rights, and medicine are highlighted in biographical passages and engaging photographs. The authors note that their book is simply a starting point to help introduce children to the heroes listed within, and they provide plenty of website and book recommendations to support further research. Since it is difficult to narrow the list of notable Americans down to sixty, they include additional figures of note in an Even More American Heroes section at the back of the book. But perhaps the best part about this lovely text is the collaborative approach the authors take in encouraging readers to consider their own heroes: family members, teachers, doctors, club leaders, and community helpers. Denenberg and Roscoe inspire children to take action in thanking the personal, perhaps unsung, heroes in their own lives. This book would be an awesome addition to a social studies classroom for upper elementary through junior high students, and it would be a great gift for anyone looking to provide children with inspiring stories of heroic Americans. It was shipped from Pennsylvania, to Atlanta, past Alabama to Texas, enjoyed several days in Texas, then to Minneapolis, Jacksonville, Florida, back to Atlanta, finally to Birmingham, and Huntsville. The seller was very responsive and I decided it was interesting to see if/how the book would arrive. Thanks, Joe
