Pastors and everyday disciples learned to chart a path toward greater fruitfulness using a common language that was practical, comprehensible, and effective. Most of the language and examples in the original book relied on attractional assumptions, those that equip congregations to attract people from the outside to attend their services, join in existing ministries, and become members. In recent years, however, our most fruitful congregations have learned that while attractional models are helpful and necessary, they are not enough. Faith communities must also develop ministries based on missional assumptions-efforts that primarily serve people who are not members of the church and may never cross the threshold of a church door.
