This 128 page volume in the "In American History" series tells how the territory of Kansas came to be free of slavery: the citizens of the area voted to determine its fate, with a lot of blood shed along the way. The Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854 "allowed popular sovereignty to decide whether the new territories of Kansas and Nebraska would be slave states or free states." This is a dry book about a dry subject. Black and white photographs of famous politicians of the time, hand bills, and maps are interspersed with text. Not every page has an illustration, however. Little thought has been given to browse-appeal, or to giving a reader any reason to use this book, except as report fodder. This will be useful for students in the areas of the United States that were directly involved in this historical act, but few others. Titles contain chapter notes, a further reading list, Internet addresses, a timeline, maps, and an index., Readers join Debra McArthur as she examines the Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854, which created the Kansas Territory. Whether the territory would become a slave state or Free State was up to its citizens, so abolitionist Northerners and proslavery Southerners began sending money, arms, settlers, and militia to Kansas to support their views. This sparked a conflict which would be called "Bleeding Kansas" because of the violence that left many dead as the two sides sparred for control. The struggle in Kansas was foreshadowing of the upheaval to come during the Civil War.
