Reviews
"Still the best-written text on the period."--Paul Barrett, Illinois Institute of Technology "Beautifully written. . . . Unquestionably the finest history of the post-World War Two era."--Lewis H. Carlson, Western Michigan University "The Unfinished Journey still makes our students feel the history of the postwar era and is unsurpassed in its civil rights coverage."--Mollie C. Davis, Queens College, "This is an excellent text on recent American history. The chapters provide thorough detail, supporting evidence, and are tied together with excellent writing. Chafe thoughtfully presents the many sides of issues and historical figures. The bibliography reflects good attention to recent scholarship and the chapter concepts are beautifully detailed in chapter introductions and conclusionsEL Chafe writes with skill and precisionEL It is substantive and gives fabulous analysis that is crucial for understanding this important period of American history. This is what my students need to better understand the issues, ideas, and political framework of contemporary American life." - Dan Fountain, Meredith College, will adopt"Overall, my opinion of the current edition is good. It provides a good balance between the various "types" of history -- social, political, economic, etc. The result is a good overall discussion of the United States since 1945EL My students enjoy how the various topics are blended together in a way that shows the events and developments in any given decade/period covered by the text."- Carol Sue Humphrey, Oklahoma Baptist University, will adopt"Chafe has always worked extremely well in my courses on recent U.S. history. It is readable and provides an excellent, comprehensive treatment of political, diplomatic and social history." - Gary May, University of Delaware , will adopt"It achieves an admirable balance between breath and depth, and between engaging narrative and scholarly analysis. It's especially strong in discussing domestic social and political changes, in particular the civil rights movement. The added emphasis in the new edition on the rise and fall of the liberal consensus as an organizing theme for understanding Cold War America is quite effective." - Zuoyue Wang, California State Polytechnic University, Pomona, Will adopt"Very good -narrative is beautiful. It could do more with cultural history and rise of the Right Wing in the 60s (as a social movement)EL Has a strong conceptual framework with which students can engage --agree/disagree (and instructor too)." - Stephanie Yuhl, College of the Holy Cross, will adopt."Still the best-written text on the period."--Paul Barrett, Illinois Institute of Technology"Beautifully written. . . . Unquestionably the finest history of the post-World War Two era."--Lewis H. Synopsis
This popular and classic text chronicles America's roller-coaster journey through the decades since World War II. Considering both the paradoxes and the possibilities of postwar America, William H. Chafe portrays the significant cultural and political themes that have colored our country's past and present, including issues of race, class, gender, foreign policy, and economic and social reform. He examines such subjects as the Vietnam War, the civil rights movement, the origins and the end of the Cold War, the culture of the 1970s, the rise of the New Right, the events of September 11th and their aftermath, and various presidencies. Now thoroughly revised and updated, the seventh edition of The Unfinished Journey combines and reorganizes several chapters. The former Chapter 14, "New Rules, Old Realities," is now divided into two chapters. The new Chapter 14, "An Era of Political Malaise," covers the political history of the 1970s. It is followed by Chapter 15, "A Divided Culture, A Divided Society," which assesses the shifting cultural landscape of the 1970s and the emergence of major fissures in the social system of the nation. The final chapter contains substantial new material on the administration of George W. Bush, the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, the election of 2008, and the first year of Barack Obama's presidency. Brilliantly written by a prize-winning historian, The Unfinished Journey, Seventh Edition, is an essential text for all students of recent American history., This popular and classic text chronicles America's roller-coaster journey through the decades since World War II. - e***a (272)- Bewertung vom Käufer.Letzter MonatBestätigter KaufOrdered from USA and arrived to me in UK about 10 days later. Book appropriately packaged and mostly as described. Was missing the cd as listed but communication with the seller was friendly and polite if not a little confusing - partial refunds are only offered after you start the formal eBay return request process, they aren't capable of giving refunds after simple messaging to customer service. All in all though, great value and a positive transaction. Would interact again 👍
- e***- (123)- Bewertung vom Käufer.Letzte 6 MonateBestätigter KaufUnfortunately I received a damaged book, the item and the package both were damaged and it was clearly evident its appearance that it happened during transit. The seller was very understanding and gave me a full refund for the damaged book, though it was no fault of their own. Other than the damage, the book was as described, the quality and condition aside from the damaged spot was like new. The cost of the book was reasonable. I would definitely purchase from the seller again.
