Sam did not wait till June 19th, 1865 Juneteenth to free his servants. He read them Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation in September, 1862 and freed all his servants. Many stayed on and worked for pay. All his servants were always allowed to work on outside jobs and keep all the money they earned on the outside. Jeff knew Houston for the last ten years of Sam's life.
