Butterfly Battle is aimed at children between the ages of nine to twelve, but crosses the age borders. Children of six to eight enjoyed the exciting fantasy when it was read to them at school. Adults have been captivated by the story. Butterfly Battle is vigorously anti-war, but also shows that war is sometimes forced on us e.g.the war against Hitler. When Superwasps invade Leponea, a peaceful butterfly paradise, Robert and his sister Kim enter the insect world and join in the fight for freedom. Robert is fascinated by computer war games, but when he is caught up in real war, he finds that it is very different from toys, model battlefields and television. A boy, because of his age and size, obviously cannot be a soldier, let alone commander. In the fantasy, however, Robert acts like a man, a true general. Since he's an expert on computer game strategies, he becomes the Commander of the Insect Allies' army. For Robert, organisation of the army and pre-war planning is fun. Then the war starts. His soldiers are butterflies, ants and other insects, but like human troops, fret, become nauseous and find it difficult to sleep before battle. When the action begins, they don't have time to worry and fight bravely. They panic when the combat goes against them. As the war drags on, Robert observes the suffering of his soldiers and Leponea's inhabitants. Ridden by guilt, he resolves never to play war games again. There is a lot of allegories and symbolism in the book. Leponea is a peaceful, ideal paradise and its rulers Pepe and Lima symbolise saints who ascend to heaven. The chapter of Superwasps shows how evil dictators such as Hitler rouse the mob. The formations of war are based on the Battle of Waterloo, but the Allies are Second World War heroes fighting Hitler and other fascists. The Superwasp characters symbolise Nazis and other fascists. The butterfly characters and their insect allies are like our grand parents and great grand parents, who had to make a stand and fight Hitler. This book promotes conservation and sparks an interest in insects. It delves into the mystery of life and death. In researching the book, author Neil Behrmann, visited the Waterloo battlefield near Brussels and wrote an article for The Wall Street Journal. I wanted to go there to sense the battle atmosphere of the opening computer game scene. In the Battle of The Wasps, later in the book, the red ant regiments apply the same defensive square formations as the red uniformed English and Scottish regiments at Waterloo. A wounded Ant character, called Ponsonby, narrates what happened. He's named after Lieutenant Colonel Frederick Ponsonby who was severely wounded, but miraculously survived the battle. After reading countless books and articles on insects and visiting butterfly conservation centres, I found that so called creepy crawlies are immensely sophisticated and powerful. Bombadier Beetles, the Allies' artillery, squirt acid in real life. Leaf cutting ants build bridges. The insect characters, by and large, can carry out the tasks described in the plot. Butterfly Battle is not only a page turner, it will help educate children. Insects such as malaria carrying mosquitoes and swarms of locusts are pests. Children, however, can learn from the book that the vast majority fertilise plants. Bees and ants have a strong cooperative social order. They help each other find food and feed their queens. Ants are disciplined and rescue fallen comrades. There are similarities with humans. Butterflies court each other in ritualistic flying patterns. They flash their magnificent colours and patterns. Butterflies, moths and some other insects have perfumes, known as pheromones to attract mates. Spiders protect the eggs of their young. Silkworms produce silk.
