Reviews
For anyone who was ever a bored undergraduate struggling with the mystery of how the Iliad could have been considered a thrilling, action-packed tale, John Dolan's War Nerd Iliad solves it at last. Thanks to Dolan's propulsive prose translation ... we get it at last! -- Eileen Jones, Lecturer at UC Berkeley Department of Film and Media, author of Film Suck and film critic for Jacobin.|9781627310505|, draws you deep into a world of flawed gods and fated human beings. In doing so John Dolan invokes the spirit not only of Homer's world but also of our own. The result is a living Iliad, a tale for telling by the campfire or reading by the fireplace. Writing in his own unique style, Dolan shares with the Zelazny of Creatures of Light and Darkness and the Erikson of the Malazan Books of the Fallen the ability to combine wit and drama, martial thunder and quiet pathos into a wonderful telling of a timeless tale. -- Felipe Gutteriez, Continuing Lecturer at UC Berkeley Department of Rhetoric

Synopsis
We recognize the names: Achilles, Odysseus, Zeus, and Apollo. We're taught that The Iliad is a foundational text of civilization. But who has really read the text? Until now, The Iliad was hijacked by academics and used to bludgeon schoolchildren as a boring-yet- mandatory reading. Poet, novelist, essayist, and former teacher John Dolan revisits this ancient tale and restores it to its ancient glory. The Greeks and Trojans are still fighting. The gods are still interfering. But in Dolan's version, you'll be amazed at how funny, raw, and terrifying this doomed world of war really is. He strips away clunky, archaic language to reveal the true meaning and themes that animate this tale of war and futility. John Dolan's work under the nom de guerre "Gary Brecher The War Nerd" has been met with both acclaim and controversy. Dolan's version of The Iliad is sapped of the usual saccharine romance attributed to "heroes" and lets the action tell the story. Regardless of attributed name, Dolan/Brecher is an astute observer of modern warfare who now turns that keen analysis to the most classical of documented battles, The Iliad . John Dolan now works with Mark Ames (of eXile fame) to produce the Radio War Nerd weekly podcast on military matters. Born in Denver, Colorado, Dolan currently lives in Macedonia., The War Nerd takes on Homer in a new translation; a classic gory, funny, tragic story in today's language., For too long The Iliad has been hijacked by unreadable writers. It began with Homer as a campfire tale and here it is, restored to life. - h***c (1134)- Bewertung vom Käufer.Letzter MonatBestätigter KaufI will say that the seller did give me a refund. However, it was extremely inconvenient because they failed to disclose in the listing like you were supposed to that. This was for a region two DVD, which does not play in the United States. That was not in the listing so I ended up ordering it and then having to request a refund, which was just an inconvenience that could’ve been avoided if they had listed it correctly.
