    Reviews
Brevard S. Childs "Marvin Sweeney's learned monograph will shortly become a standard reference work for all future researchers of Isaiah 1-39. He offers exhaustive bibliographies, lucid background material for the current scholarly agenda, and a detailed structural analysis of each individual unit. . . Useful material for the continuing interpretive enterprise. " H. G. M. Williamson "Sweeney stands in the forefront of modern research on the book of Isaiah. This valuable commentary, which includes a comprehensive bibliographical survey of previous work as well as many stimulating new insights, is an indispensable resource to which scholars will want to return time and again in their continuing engagement with this central book of the Hebrew Bible." Bibliotheca Sacra "A welcome addition to this series, which has proved helpful in approaching the Old Testament as literature. . . The author has provided a reliable and practical access to the complexity of the Isaianic material, an entrÉe that will prove beneficial to pastors and scholars alike." Internationale Zeitschriftenschau fÜr Bibelwissenschaft und Grenzgebiete (IZBG) "An ideal companion to all other existing commentaries with whom Sweeney engages in a constant and often lively dialogue. . . Highly recommended!" Journal of the American Oriental Society "Highly recommended." Journal of the Evangelical Theological Society "This volume, the ninth to appear in the series, is one of the best so far. . . The introduction is very well written and shows a keen grasp of the issues in form criticism, both past and present. . . Even for those who may disagree with Sweeney's views on compositional history, this is an invaluable tool for understanding the compositional strategy of the book of Isaiah. Sweeney's meticulous work is to be highly commended and will stand the test of time as a first-class exegetical tool." Scripture Bulletin (U.K.) "S. should be applauded for the quality of these and for this contribution to the long history of eminent commentaries on Isaiah. No serious study of Isaiah can take place without it." The Bible Today "An invaluable tool for teacher and student alike." Ronald E. Clements "Sweeney's book marks a major milestone in Isaiah studies. The close examinations of the forms of the prophecies of Isaiah 1-39 and the role that this primary collection has played in the structure and formation of the book of Isaiah as a whole are splendidly shown. . . This volume must surely become an indispensable starting point for the serious student, and I warmly recommend it." Biblical Interpretation "Sweeney has written a very important contribution, not only to Isaiah 1-39 but also to the formation of Isaiah 1-66. His work is certainly the most up to date commentary on Isaiah 1-39 and all readers of this text will be grateful for Sweeney's exhaustive bibliography on the subject. No one who is seriously engaged in the research of Isaiah can neglect Sweeney's work and his contribution will certainly stimulate further discussion."

    Synopsis
1 Samuel is Volume VII of The Forms of the Old Testament Literature, a series that aims to present a form-critical analysis of every book and each unit in the Hebrew Bible. Fundamentally exegetical, the FOTL volumes examine the structure, genre, setting, and intention of the biblical literature in question. They also study the history behind the form-critical discussion of the material, attempt to bring consistency to the terminology for the genres and formulas of the biblical literature, and expose the exegetical process so as to enable students and pastors to engage in their own analysis and interpretation of the Old Testament texts. Antony Campbell's valuable form-critical analysis of 1 Samuel highlights both the literary development of the text itself and its meanings for its audience. A skilled student of the Hebrew scriptures and their ancient context, Campbell shows modern readers the process of editing and reworking that shaped 1 Samuel's final form. As Campbell's study reveals, the tensions and contradictions that exist in the present text reflect a massive change in the way of life of ancient Israel. Samuel, the first prophet, here emerges to preside over the rise of Saul, Israel's first king, to be the agent of Saul's rejection, and to anoint David as Israel's next king and the first established head of a royal dynasty. The book of 1 Samuel captures the work of God within this interplay of sociopolitical forces, and Campbell fruitfully explores the text both as a repository of traditions of great significance for Israel and as a paradigm of Israel's use of narrative for theological expression., Isaiah 1 -39 , by Marvin A. Sweeney, is volume XVI of The Forms of the Old Testament Literature , a series that aims to present a form- critical analysis of every book and each unit in the Hebrew Bible. Fundamentally exegetical, the FOTL volumes examine the structure , genre , setting , and intention of the biblical literature in question. They also study the history behind the form-critical discussion of the material, attempt to bring consistency to the terminology for the genres and formulas of the biblical literature, and expose the exegetical procedure so as to enable students and pastors to engage in their own anlysis and interpretation of the Old Testament texts.
