An Alabama cotton farmer's son, Lester Romine grew up amid the hardship of the Great Depression. He picked cotton every morning before school, living a hardscrabble life that instilled in him a strong moral compass and faith. Romine dreamed of flying fighter jets-a new breed of aircraft just soaring skyward as he worked the fields. Commissioned as a US Air Force officer in 1950, the young man got the chance to realize his ambitions, and he ran-or rather flew-with it. High Flight recalls Lester Romine's distinguished military career. From survival training in frigid Alaska to tours of duty in war-torn Vietnam, Romine tells tales of triumph and tragedy. This is not, however, a story that glorifies war. Romine vividly portrays the pain and horror of bombing the enemy and enduring enemy fire. He did what he had to in order to serve his country, never losing sight of his goal of protecting his nation and its citizens, no matter the cost. A tale of honor, courage, and quiet faith, High Flight is the thrilling, thought-provoking tale of one man's life of service.
